O falcon, how I envy your good fortune: you have wings to fly.
O falcon, how fortunate you are—you have a wing to fly with.
Whenever the urge strikes you, you break loose and fly toward the open sky.
Whenever the urge comes to you, you take off and fly toward the air.

Between my heart and you, by God, the difference is vast.
Between my heart and you, by God, lies a great difference.
Whenever you beat your wings, you soar free; and whenever my heart beats, it twists into knots.
When you beat your wings, you take flight; when I beat mine, my heart twists.

You wheel aloft, while I, down on the ground, can barely walk.
You circle aloft, while on the ground I can barely walk.
In the deserts of my days, the wolf of my night has howled.
In the deserts of my days, the wolf of my night has howled.

Above your sky are clouds; beneath mine is the blaze of noon.
Above, your sky holds clouds; below, mine holds scorching heat.
My foot stands on burning sand, and my throbbing heart is wrung.
My foot is on burning sand, and my heart writhes.

Beware, O falcon, lest they snare you and hold you captive.
Beware, O falcon, lest they snare you into captivity.
Woe to a falcon whose tether jerks him back whenever he means to fly away.
Woe to a falcon whose tether jerks him back whenever he means to fly.

The nights have hooded him on a low perch,
after his wing beat through the open air whenever he pleased.
after his wing beat the air whenever he wished.

Whenever a noble falcon feels confined, he rises to take flight;
Every free spirit, when distressed, rises to take flight.
an hour of wheeling in the sky is medicine for his heart.
An hour of circling in the sky is a remedy for his heart.

Oh, the agony of the wing a broken bird must drag—
Oh, the torment of the wing a broken falcon drags!
each time the broken-pinioned bird springs up, it falls.
Whenever he springs up with broken pinions, he falls.
