A Najdi woman—she deserves love,
She deserves love, this woman of Najd,
lofty in station, a wondrous marvel.
Exalted in standing, wondrous.

Her eye—O what an eye!—is ocean-deep,
Her eye—oh, the eye of a Bahri falcon,
the ruin of lovers’ hearts.
The undoing of lovers’ hearts.

And her neck—oh, the neck of a gazelle,
she shies at a passing figure, coy and playful.
Playful, she startles at a silhouette.

The lavender plants swayed in it.

يوم الذي صابني صابه
I found pure accord with the pure-hearted one
I was sincere with one of pure intent,
when what struck me struck the beloved too.
When what struck me struck him.

For me, there is no more going or coming;
I no longer come or go;
our love stood at the beloved’s door.
Our love stopped at his door.
