Beneath the moon, he called out to his beloved and hailed him.
The moon set, it called to its crescent and shouted to it
Three times, and on the fourth he moaned.
Three times, and on the fourth it embraced it
حدرbeneath القمرthe moon ياoh ماhow often همسhe whispered لهto him وناجاهand confided in him

Beneath the moon—oh, how often he whispered to him and confided in him.
The moon set, oh how it whispered to it and confided in it
And how often their eyes met in its light.
And their eyes, how much they met with its light

And last night, he outdid the wolf with his howling.
And last night it passed by the wolf with its howling
And his thoughts set off, racing through the nights.
Its suspicions stood still during the nights interacting

ومرand sometimes تضاحكsmiled لهat him ومرand sometimes يتباكنwept together
Sometimes around him, and sometimes passing him by.
It passed by it once, and passed it another time
And sometimes they smiled at him, and sometimes they wept.
And once it smiled at it, and once cried for it

Such are the ways of one roused from sleep
These are the equals that insomnia drove away from sleep
By the beloved's phantom that crossed his mind.
The phantom of the beloved that was on its mind answered back

وانand if صوتcalls القمريthe turtledove لصوتfor the voice الهوىof love حنhe yearns
If his eyes see beauty, he longs for it.
If its eyes saw the beauty it wished for
And if the turtledove calls, he yearns for love's voice.
And if the voice of the crescent is the voice of passion, it softened
الجارحهthe wounding one تجرحwounds وتسريand journeys by night وتنساهand forgets him
وجروحand the wounds مجروحone wounded اللياليthe nights تساقنfollow one another
The wounding one wounds, journeys by night, and forgets him.
The wounding one wounds and flows and forgets it
And the wounds of one wounded by the nights follow one another.
And the wounds of the wounded nights converge

And the hidden wound—time's stab—doubles him over.
And the hidden one, the stab of its time wrinkled it
And the visible wound—his eyes disclose it.
And the separation from it, its eyes express
