God enjoined care for you as no pages have.

And poetry draws near in fear, then withdraws.

Never, by God, O my mother, have I spoken in rhyme

without your stature surpassing what I describe.

The field of my letters grows green when they are borne

by a cloud of my mother's, upon which fragrance is plucked.

'The mother is a school,' they said; and I said: within her,

all schools are courtyards standing in her service.

Here I have come with poetry, drawing her near to my rhyme,

as though the mother is described by her indescribability.

If I utter verse about the mother, it rises in apology.

Here I have come before the gathering to confess.
