The millstone of Badr ground its people to destruction.
And for the like of Badr, eyes stream and weep.

لا تَبْعَدُوا إِنَّ الْمُلُوكَ تُصَرَّعُ
The people's nobles were slain around their watering pools.
May you not be far away; indeed, kings are felled.

Radiant, with whom the destitute sought refuge,

حَمَّالُ أَثْقالٍ يَسُودُ وَيَرْبَعُ
Open-handed when the stars failed their promise,
A bearer of burdens, who led and took the chief's quarter-share.

And some people say—whose displeasure delights me—
“Ka'b, the son of al-Ashraf, has kept grieving.”

They spoke truly; would that the earth, at the hour they were slaughtered,
Had kept sinking with its people and splitting apart.

May he who relayed the news be struck by a spear-thrust,
Or live blind and trembling, unable to hear.

I was told that all the sons of al-Mughirah
Were humbled by Abu al-Hakim's slaying, and were maimed.

And Rabi'ah's two sons beside him, and Munabbih—
None matched those destroyers, nor did Tubba'.

To visit Yathrib with armies; for only
A gallant man defends noble ancestral honor.
