ظَعَنَ الشَبابُ مَعَ الخَليطِ الظاعِنِ
Youth has departed, and every loved companion must part.
Youth has passed and every intimacy has parted
Youth has gone away with the departing company.
Youth has vanished along with the motley throng

وَأَبَت سُعاتُكُمُ إِباءَ الحارِنِ
They sought vengeance, and their ally secured it for them.
They sought and their Master granted their wish
And your envoys refused like a balking steed.
But your auspicious times refused to linger

إِنَّ المَكارِمَ نِعمَ رِبحُ الثامِنِ
Gird your waistcloths, then replenish your wealth.
Gird your loins and invigorate your wealth
Noble deeds are indeed a fine profit for the trader.

What solace is there, when Rabiʿah ibn Mukaddam
How is there sadness when Rabī‘ah bin Mukaddam
has his blood-price paid at your expense with youths and bands of men?
Leads forth against you fine lads and beauties

And he is the helmet in the charge, while Harith
He being al-Tarīkah in cunning and Ḥārith
is a truffle of the flatlands, fixed in its place.
Loud rumbler in places of soft sand

How many a poor man with widows to support they left
How many bereft women of family men have they left
as meat for wild beasts—and many a destitute, frail man!
Prey for beasts and moaning in desolation
