Was it over the dwelling's traces, deserted for years,
From the homelands of the house I spent years
that you wept and remained downcast and sorrowful?
You wept and remained sad and forlorn

There the wind dragged its skirts,
The wind dragged its train behind
and left none of its traces discernible.
Leaving no visible trace or sign

And, despite her distance, I was reminded of her
And in your absence a specter reminded me
by her phantom, a night-visitor that comes upon us.
A shadow crept upon me like a lurking thief

When I saw crying was foolishness
beside ruins already decayed was folly,
Before ruins we had lived in too long

صَcompletion of 'she-camel' مِنof حَزَنٍsorrow وَعَصَيتُand I defied الشُؤوناthe tear ducts
صَ مِن حَزَنٍ وَعَصَيتُ الشُؤونا
I urged the young she-camel on, despite what I bore
I scolded my heart for its sorrow
of sorrow, and defied my tear ducts.
And disobeyed grief's commands

faltering nor spiteful and obstinate.
No stumbling or heaviness to lament

As though I had bound with her girths
As if I had yoked for two barren years
a lean, stout-bodied wild ass, two years past maturity.
A dense-flanked, muscular steed forlorn

He herds white-bellied mares, each of which you see
Twisted-legged yet nimble-hoofed

A red fox hardy and lean

And he drove them on, and the awned grass grew tall,
When their stallion came upon them
and roused them; then, when they grew thirsty,
You'd see in their midst green meadows

and the pools' scant water had failed them,
He'd harass them relentlessly
and they had no drink from Thādiq,
With cries in the wilderness till they soften

they set al-Qanān at their left armpit,
And batter their skulls sullenly
and kept al-ʿUnāb's water to their right.
So to escape his harm we took precautions

And they flicked their tails between the nearer reaches of al-Ghaḍā
When the heavy one turned her tail on him
and ʿUnayzah, across a far-reaching stretch.
He was furious and charged from behind

They left him—and so did the chase—
Behind her hind was a mule
a hollow belly and a well-fleshed back,
In the mare's place, hiding between

and light, bowed legs with sound shank-bones,
He'd push them from the right flank
and a hard, weighty haunch-joint.
And they'd strike his nose and forehead

Whenever his storming charge bore down on them,
So he brought them to the hilltop thicket
you would see folds on either side of his rump.
Be they in heat or be they stout
يُعَضِّضُهُنَّhe bites them repeatedly عَضيضَthe biting of الثِقاthe straightening clamp (word begins)

He bites them as the straightening clamp grips
They'd kick up dust in his face
a Samharī spear until it grows pliant.
Like smoke above glowing embers

And he gnaws their rumps, scowling,
And drank from the cold well aware
so they guard against his harm by running hard.
No milking nor drinking there

Whenever a spiteful mare turns toward him,
While frogs held their breath
he pins back his ears, for he has drawn her rancor out.

Behind their hindquarters he raises a clamor,
And met one with brimming spite
in the overseer's place among the arrow-gamblers.
Clinging suspicions in his heart

He rattles his cry an arm's length from them,
Short of tusk, fine of stripe
and they strike his muzzle and forehead.
Asking will they come or will he wait

وَقَد كُنَّ يَأجِنَّ أَو كُنَّ جونا
He brought them to pools brimming with water,
Coveting the absent herd, hoping
whose waters had grown stagnant, or were dark.
To strike down a warrior, violence his trade

They raise dust across his face,
So they came filled with dread
the color of smoke above the hearths.
Admitting to no company or friend

And they drink cool water; he knew
Their knees plunged in cold clear water
there was no second watering and no resting by the pool.
Sweet taste that they imbibe

Their breath drives the frogs away,
In succession they drink the draft
so they climb just above the water's rim.

They encountered a wrathful man, clinging close,
So he watched until they neared
as stone cooking pots cling, turning over his guesses.

Short-fingered and slender-limbed,
Then he crept off with yellow paste
he says, 'Will they come, or will they not arrive?'
On his palm, breadcrumbs soft he'd gathered

يُصيبُ المَقاتِلَ حَتفاً رَصينا
He heads for his hiding place, rejoicing,
Ready to dash on their trail aloft
one who strikes the vital parts with certain death.
To strike down the bustards in their haven

They came and felt a stir of fear,
He let fly an arrow into the spine
yet had no certain sign of men.
Of a herd wary of his cunning intention
وَتُلقىand are plunged الأَكارِعَthe lower legs فيinto بارِدٍcool water

شَهِيٍّ مَذاقَتُهُ تَحتَسينا
Their lower legs are plunged into cool water,
It passed by neck and foreleg
delicious to taste, which you sip.
For this was not a deed righteous

They hasten their gulps, taking them one after another,
Then in bitter regret he moaned
like throwers' pebbles rattling in a well.
And in dejection he was cloaked
فَأَمسَكَso he held back يَنظُرُwatching حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen

He held back, watching, until
Their hooves struck the pebbles
they neared their fill, or had already quenched their thirst.
And the boulders with them collided

عَلى الكَفِّ تَجمَع أَرزاً وَلينا
He drew aside with a yellow bow of nabʿ wood,
The dusk led them in haste
which in the palm combines firmness and suppleness,
Swifter than racers at the starter's line
مُعِدّاًreadying عَلىupon عَجسِهاits grip مُرهَفاًa sharpened arrow

readying on its grip a sharpened arrow,
Panting and heaving in their wake
broad in both edges, fine-tipped and keen.
Mournful, his spirit mournful in their midst
فَأَرسَلَso he loosed سَهماًan arrow عَلىat فُقرَةٍan opening for a shot

Then he loosed an arrow at an opening,
You'd think amidst the sea mist their number
while they drank, taking no precaution.
A lark trilling amidst the groves

It passed across his upper chest and foreleg,
So at dawn he returned torn by grief
and such a shot was not his usual practice.
While the herd gathered rested and calm

and they turned away, clothing themselves in dust.

Their hooves pass pebbles back and forth,
and they pelt one another with solid rocks.

He drove them on through the heart of evening,
faster than men driving their beasts back from water.

In the open plain you would take his tenfold braying
for a reckless fool's song among tipsy men.

By morning he was rejoicing at the valley bend,
and they were gathered together, at rest.
