Lo, my wife came early, echoing whoever reproached me.
Alas my wedding came when cheeks grew bearded
And how close women's judgments are to ruin!
And dreams of women closer to repentance
أَفيwas it over جَنبِthe matter of بَكرٍa young camel قَطَّعَتنيshe tore me apart مَلامَةًreproach

Was it over a young camel that she tore me apart with reproach?
By a virgin's side did censure slice me through
By my life, her reproach was twofold.
By my life, her censure was a doubled blow
أَلاOh لاdo not تَلوميblame وَيبَwoe to غَيرِكِsomeone other than you عارِياًa naked man

Oh, do not blame—woe to someone other than you!—a naked man
Do not blame me, others bare I've spied
who one day saw his garment and clothed himself.
Who've clothed themselves throughout time in dignity
فَأُقسِمُso I swear لَولاwere it not for أَنthat أُسِرَّI conceal نَدامَةًa regret

So I swear: were it not for one regret I would conceal
I swear had I not feared a shame confessed
and another I would proclaim if separation carried you far away,
Another hinted, as resolve in you gave way

and the talk of men who care nothing for our affairs:
And the saying, "Men who care not for our plight"
“Ka'b's course has gone astray—what he wanted and what he planned”—
Went astray Kacb's desire and wisdom's sway
لَقَدsurely سَكَنَتwould have dwelt بَينيbetween me وَبَينَكِand between you حِقبَةًfor an age

there would have dwelt between me and you for an age
For so long estrangement sat between us two
wide-eyed, mottled-limbed wild cows with their calves.
With glances from eyes violent in their heat
فَياso, O راكِباًrider إِماif ever عَرَضتَyou pass by فَبَلِّغَنthen surely convey

So, O rider, if you pass that way, be sure to tell
So rider, if you happen by, relay
the sons of Milqat, on my behalf, when asked, “Whom did he mean?”
The sons of Milqat I was he who they meant
فَماfor ... not خِلتُكُمI thought you ياO قَومُpeople كُنتُمyou were أَذِلَّةًabject

For I never thought you, O people, were abject,
My people, whence I left you were so lowly
nor thought you were ripe fruit for a snatcher.
Ne'er did I desert you to a thief's domain
لَقَدsurely كُنتُمyou were بِالسَهلِon the plain وَالحَزنِand the rugged ground حَيَّةًa serpent
إِذاwhen لَدَغَتit bit لَمdid not تَشفِheal لَدغَتَهاits bite الرُقىincantations
You were surely a serpent on plain and rugged ground:
You were with flatlands and with grief a snake
when it bit, no incantations could heal its bite.
Whose sting no charm could ever heal again
فَإِنso if تَغضَبواyou become angry أَوor تُدرِكواyou secure redress ليfor me بِذِمَّةٍunder a pledge

So if you are angered, or secure redress for me under a pledge,
If you grow angry or bind me to contract
and Zayd, after poverty, has now acquired possessions,
Then Zayd morned in poverty's trap ensnared
وَإِنand indeed الكُمَيتَthe bay horse عِندَin the keeping of زَيدٍZayd ذِمامَةٌan obligation of honor

and indeed, the bay horse in Zayd's keeping is an obligation of honor,
Truly with Zayd the bond is now one of might
and the bay horse is unmistakable to anyone who has seen him.
No more obscurity for one who's seen the snare

He stands out even to dull-witted men, and one like him
Proof to the elephants of all men he shows
stands out when led among horses or when he runs.
Proof when saddled amongst horses does he bear

Tightly built, like a wolf of the sandy thicket, shod
A racehorse like the best steed of Qasim
with spade-like hooves whose heels no bruising makes bleed;
Tearing ground not marred by any track or rut

strong in the splint bones, thick-limbed, taut of thigh-sinew,
Hard and unyielding, determined in the haul
as though the rear rider's seat on his back were a rock.
As if the saddle's place was his flesh bare
