رَحَلتُI journeyed إِلىto قَوميmy people لِأَدعوto call جُلَّهُمmost of them
إِلىto أَمرِa course حَزمٍfirm resolve أَحَكَمتُهُmade it firm الجَوامِعُthe binding ties
I journeyed to my people to call most of them
I traveled to my people to call most of them
to a resolute course made firm by binding ties,
To a matter of firm resolve, refined by the mosques,
لِيوفواso they may be faithful بِماto what كانواthey had عَلَيهِupon it تَعاقَدواmade a mutual pledge
بِخَيفِat Khayf مِنىًMina وَاللَهُand God راءٍseeing وَسامِعُand hearing
so they might fulfill what they had pledged together
So they fulfill what they had pledged
at Khayf in Mina, while God sees and hears,
In fear of me while God hears and watches,
وَتوصَلَand be joined أَرحامٌkinship ties وَيُفَرَجَand be relieved مُغرَمٌa debtor
وَتَرجِعَand return بِالوُدِّwith affection القَديمِold الرَواجِعُthose returning
and kinship ties be restored, and a debtor relieved,
And kinship is joined and the troubled finds relief,
and those returning come back with the old affection.
And the old affection returns to the penitent,
فَأَبلِغso inform بِهاof it أَفناءthe clans عُثمانَUthman كُلَّهاall of them
وَأَوساًand Aws فَبَلِّغهاthen tell them الَّذيwhat أَناI صانِعُdoing
So inform all the clans of Uthman of it,
So convey it through all the quarters of Uthman
and Aws; tell them what I am doing:
And to Aws - so convey what I am doing -
سَأَدعوهُمُI shall call them جُهديmy utmost effort إِلىto البِرِّrighteousness وَالتُقىand piety
وَأَمرِand the cause of العُلاhigh honor ماas long as شايَعَتنيsupport me الأَصابِعُthe fingers
I shall call them with all my effort to righteousness and piety,
I will call on them with all my strength for righteousness and piety
and the cause of high honor, as long as my fingers support me.
And the way of high morals, however many blame me,
فَكونواso be جَميعاًunited ماas much as اِستَطَعتُمyou can فَإِنَّهُfor indeed it
سيَلبَسُكُمwill clothe you ثَوبٌa garment مِنَfrom اللَهِGod واسِعُample
So be united as far as you can, for surely
So be altogether, as much as you can, for
an ample garment from God will clothe you.
A garment from God will clothe you, ample and wide,
وَقُومواand rise فآسواthen aid قَومَكُمyour people فَاِجمَعُوهُمُthen unite them
وَكونواand be يَداًa hand تَبنيbuilds العُلاhigh honor وَتُدافِعُand defends
And rise: aid your people, then unite them,
And rise, then heal your people, and gather them together,
and be one hand that builds high honor and stands in defense.
And be a hand that builds glory and wards off attacks,
فَإِنbut if أَنتُمُyou لَمnot تَفعَلواdo ماwhat أَمَرتُكُمI commanded you
فَأَوفواthen be faithful بِهاto them إِنَّindeed العُهودَcovenants وَدائِعُtrusts
But if you do not do what I have commanded you,
For if you do not do as I instructed you,
then be faithful to them, for covenants are trusts.
Then keep to it - oaths are trusts -
لشَتانَwhat a difference indeed مَنone who يَدعوcalls فُيوفيthen is faithful بِعَهدِهِto his pledge
وَمَنand one who هُوَhe لِلعَهدِof the covenant المُؤَكَّدَfirmly confirmed خالِعُa renouncer
What a difference between one who calls and then keeps his pledge
Far apart are those who pledge then honor their vow
and one who casts off the firmly confirmed covenant!
And those who break firm covenants and cast them off,
إِلَيكَto you أَباO father of نَصرٍNasr أَجازَتhas traveled نَصيحَتيmy counsel
تُبَلِّغُهاconvey it عَنيfrom me المَطِيُّthe riding camels الخَواضِعُwith lowered heads
To you, Abu Nasr, my counsel has traveled,
To you, Abu Nasr, my advice is sincere
the riding camels with lowered heads convey it from me.
My mount conveys it from me, head bowed,
فَأَوفِso be faithful بِماto what عاهَدتَyou pledged بِالخَيفِat al-Khayf مِنof مِنىًMina
أَباO father of النَصرِal-Nasr إِذاwhen سُدَّتare barred عَلَيكَto you المَطالِعُthe paths upward
So keep what you pledged at al-Khayf in Mina,
So honor what you pledged in fear at Mina,
Abu al-Nasr, when the paths upward are barred to you.
Abu Nasr, when ways are closed to you,
فَنَحنُfor we بَنوsons of الأَشياخِthe elders قَدindeed تَعلَمونَهُyou know it
نُذَبِّبُwe ward off عَنfrom أَحسابِناour ancestral honor وَنُدافِعُand we defend
For we are sons of the elders, as you well know;
For we are the clan of elders, as you know,
we guard our ancestral honor and defend it.
We sacrifice ourselves and fend off attacks,
وَنَحبِسُand we hold fast بِالثَغرِat the frontier المَخوفِfeared مَحَلُّهُits site
لِيُكشَفَto be dispelled كَربٌdistress أَوor لِيُطعَمَto be fed جائِعُa hungry person
And we hold fast at the frontier whose site is feared,
And we defend the fearful frontier, its place,
so that distress may be dispelled, or a hungry person fed.
So distress may be relieved or the hungry fed.
