لعَمرُكَby your life ماnot خَشيتُI feared عَلىfor أُبَيٍّUbayy
مَصارِعَdeaths in battle بَينَbetween قَوٍّQaww فَالسُلَيِّand al-Sulayy
By your life, I did not fear for Ubayy
For your life, I never feared that my father would fall
Death in battle between Qaww and al-Sulayy;
In the midst of battle against a powerful foe
وَلَكِنّيbut I خَشيتُfeared عَلىfor أُبَيٍّUbayy
جَريرَةَthe ill consequences رُمحِهِof his spear فيin كُلَّevery حَيِّclan
But I feared for Ubayy
Rather, I feared that my father's sharp spear
The ill consequences of his spear's deeds in every clan.
Would roam in every neighborhood
مِنَamong الفِتيانِthe young men مُحلَولٍsweet-natured مُمِرٌّbitter-natured
وَأَمَارٌand ever urging بِإِرشادٍtoward right guidance وَغَيِّand error
One of the young men, sweet and bitter,
Of the impetuous youth, showing the way
And ever urging right guidance and error.
And inciting them to mischief
أَلاah! لَهفَthe anguish الأَرامِلِthe widows وَاليَتامىand the orphans
وَلَهفَand the anguish الباكِياتِthe weeping women عَلىfor أُبَيِّUbayy
Ah, the anguish of the widows and the orphans,
Alas! The yearning of the widows and orphans
And the anguish of the women weeping for Ubayy!
And the yearning of the weeping women for my father
