We attacked the clan at dawn, the clan of the sons of Jiḥāsh,

At Makrūthāʾ, with a crushing calamity.

They showed no cowardice that morning, but

Battle flared against them, and they could not mount a defense.

If it missed Saʿd son of Bakr,

It still left Saʿd’s allies as slaves—

The sons of ʿAwf and of Duhmān son of Naṣr.

And God brought about what He willed.

    رَواياهُم يُخَضخِضنَ المَزادا

    We attacked them at dawn with a host a thousand strong;

Their water-camels set the waterskins sloshing.

    They lingered at al-Akāriʿ, seeking

The shepherds of the flocks and the white sheep.

So we wheeled about once, then held back,

And offered combat to whoever wished,

With blows that make the male hyena impregnate

His mate and begin mating anew.
