ماذا يؤرُقني والنومُ يعجبني
منfrom صوتthe cry of ذيone with رعثاتwattles ساكنdwelling in الدارthe house
من صوت ذي رعثات ساكن الدار
What keeps me awake, though sleep delights me,
What disturbs my sleep, the sound of my neighbor
is the cry of the wattled dweller of the house.
With his disheveled hair, living next door
كأنّas though خماضةًa sorrel plant فيon رأسهhis head نبتتhad sprouted
كأنّ خماضةً في رأسه نبتت

من آخر الصيفِ قد همّت بإثمارِ
As though a sorrel plant had sprouted on his head
As if a vine sprouted in his head
at summer’s end, already poised to bear fruit.
Bearing fruit in late summer, heavy and ripe
