O likeness of Layla, may rain shower you generously, and may there arise
O you who resemble Layla, the rain has made your land prosperous,
for you right guidance, and may the pastures grow green around you.
And guidance and green pastures have come to you,
سَقاكِmay it water you خُدارِيٌّa dark raincloud إِذاwhen عَجَّroared عَجَّةًa roar
حَسِبتُI thought الَّذيwhoever يَدنوdraws near أَصَمَّdeaf المَسامِعِthe ears
May a dark raincloud water you: when it roars aloud,
A Khudari rain-cloud waters you when it rains heavily,
I think whoever draws near it has ears struck deaf.
I thought the one approaching was deaf to hearing,

A Yemeni cloud, its downpour's right flank over Najran,
From Yemen over Najran he inclines his course,
and from it a lightning flash over Salma and Salman;
And from there over Salma and radiant Salman,
وَمِنهُand from it عَلىover قَصرَيthe two palaces of عُمانَOman سَحيقَةٌa distant cloud-bank

and a distant bank of it over Oman's two palaces,
And from there over the lofty castles of Oman it pours down,
and at al-Khatt, a broad cloud with gushing rain-beards.
And in the valley the tents of Uthman are widespread,
تَذودُdrives back الصَباthe east wind رَيعانَهُits leading edge وَهوَwhile it is راجِحٌheavy-laden

The east wind drives back its leading edge, though it is heavy-laden,
The morning breeze repels its winds while dominant,
as thirsty camels on their fourth-day watering were driven from a trough.
As a stirring she-camel repels the mounting of males,
تُزَحِّفُmakes creep أَعلاهُits upper part الجَنوبُthe south wind بِراكِسٍat Rakis

The south wind makes its upper part creep at Rakis,
The south wind crawls over its heights inverted
as a stooping camel creeps along, limping with its load askew.
As a heavily loaded camel rises up slanted,
يَكُبُّtopples طِوالَthe tall ones of الطَلحِthe acacias فيwithin حَجَراتِهِits reaches

It topples tall acacias within its reaches,
It topples the tall acacias in their dens,
and through it the drought-stricken wastelands come alive.
And lively tongues praise him,

And a fire like an old camel's lung—its glow was raised
And the fire of dawning’s magic wood raised its light,
at dawn by gusts of the violent winds.
With the morning, the stirring gusts of wind.
