حَمَلَتْcarried إليكto you رسالةَthe message of المفجوعِthe bereaved
عينٌan eye مرقرقةٌglistening بفيضِwith the flood of دموعيmy tears
The message of the bereaved was borne to you
The teary-eyed messenger conveyed to you
By an eye glistening with the flood of my tears.
My sorrowful message overflowing with tears
لاتبخَسواdo not undervalue قَدْرَthe worth of الدموعtears فانهاfor they
دفعُthe dispelling of الهمومcares تَفيضُpour forth منfrom يَنْبوعa spring
Do not belittle the worth of tears, for they
Do not underestimate the worth of tears
Dispel cares, pouring forth from a spring.
For they are the outpouring that dispels sorrows
للنفسfor the soul حالاتٌmoods يَلَذُّis sweet لهاto it الأسىsorrow
وترىand it sees البكاءَweeping كواجبٍas a duty مشروعlegitimate
The soul has moods in which sorrow tastes sweet,
The soul has states when grief is pleasing
And sees weeping as a rightful duty.
And weeping seems a warranted duty
وأمضَّهاand the most agonizing of them فقدُthe loss of الشبابِyouth مضرَّجاًdrenched
بدمائهin its blood منfrom كفِthe hand of غيرone who is not قريعnoble
And the most searing is the loss of youth, drenched
And the most extreme is the loss of youth
In its own blood, at an ignoble man's hand.
Soaked with his blood from the grip of one without mercy
أأباO father of فلاحٍFalah هلhave سمعتَyou heard مَنَاحَةًa lament
وَصَلَتْreached إلىto أسماعِthe ears of كلِّevery سميعhearer
O Abu Falah, have you heard a lament
Oh Abul Falah, did you hear the wailing
That reached the ears of everyone who hears?
That reached the ears of every listener?
قدindeed كنتَyou were فيin مندوحةٍa way of escape عنfrom مثلِهاits like
لولاbut for قضاءٌa decree of fate ليسis not بالمدفوعto be averted
You would have been spared its like,
You had been spared the likes of it
But for a decree of fate that cannot be averted.
Were it not for a decree that could not be averted
أبكيكَI weep for you للطبعِfor the temperament الرقيقِgentle وللحِجىَand for the intellect
أبكيI weep لحبلِfor the cord of شبابِكَyour youth المقطوعsevered
I weep for you—for your gentle nature and your intellect;
I cry for your tender nature and devotion
I weep for the severed cord of your youth.
I cry for your severed rope of youth
أبكيكI weep for you لستُI am not أخْصُّI single out خلقاًa character trait واحداًone
لكنماbut rather أبكيI weep علىover المجموعthe whole
I weep for you, not singling out one trait,
I do not cry for you alone
But rather weeping for the whole.
Rather I cry for the whole group
جَزَعاًgive way to grief شقيقيهhis two full brothers فهذاfor this is موقفٌa moment
يَشْقَىsuffers بهbecause of it منwhoever لمnot يكنْwas بجَزوعprone to anguish
Give way to grief, you two brothers of his, for this is a moment
Your two brothers are distraught, for this is an occasion
In which even one not prone to anguish suffers.
That brings misery to one not stoic
أنthat التجلُّدَstoicism فيin المصابaffliction تطبُّعٌan acquired disposition
والحزنُand sorrow شيءٌsomething فيin النفوسsouls طبيعيnatural
For stoicism in affliction is an acquired habit,
To be steadfast in calamity may be a trait
While sorrow is something natural in souls.
While grief is something natural in souls
وإذاand if صدقتُI speak truthfully فانَّthen indeed عينَthe eye of أبيكماthe father of you both
قدindeed خَبَّرَتْhas told عنof قلبِهhis heart الصدوعshattered
And if I speak truly, your father's eye
And if I am truthful, then the eye of your father
Has told of his shattered heart.
Has spoken of his shattered heart
شيخوخةٌold age ماhow كانwas أحوجَهاit sorely needed إلىfor
شملٍa family circle تُسَرُّis gladdened بقربِهِby its nearness مجموعgathered together
Old age—how sorely it needed
An old age that was most in need
A gathered family in whose closeness it could rejoice.
Of the company that gladdens a gathered group
وبحَسْبِand sufficient for " أحمدَAhmad " لوعةanguish "أنَّthat ابنهُhis son "
" لبسdonned الغروبَthe sunset ولمand did not يَعُدْreturn لطلوعto rise"
" لبس الغروبَ ولم يَعُدْ لطلوع"
And it is anguish enough for Ahmad that his son
And it suffices that “Ahmad” has the agony that “his son”
Donned the sunset and did not return to rise.
“Wore the sunset and did not return for the dawn”
لوif تأذنونyou permit سألتُهُI would ask him عنabout خاطرٍa thought
مُبْكٍbringing tears يَهُزُّshakes فؤادَthe heart of كلِّevery مَروعone stricken with dread
If you permit, I would ask him about a thought
If you would permit me, I would ask him
That brings tears and shakes the heart of every stricken soul:
About a grieving thought that shakes every frightened heart
أعرفْتَhave you known فيin ساعاتِthe hours of عُمْركَyour life موقِفاًa moment
بَعَثَroused الشُّجونَsorrows كساعةِlike the hour of التوديعfarewell؟
Have you known, in the hours of your life, a moment
Have you ever known in your life, father
That roused sorrows like the hour of farewell?
A situation that stirred sorrow like the moment of parting?
إنيindeed I رأيتI found القولَspeech غيرَnot مرَّفهٍcomforting
لكنbut رأيتُI found الصمتَsilence غيرَnot بديعbeautiful
I found that speech brought no comfort,
I saw speech unbefitting, yet silence uneloquent
But I found no beauty in silence.
So my poem came to convey the torments of my grief
فأتتكso it came to you تُعْرِبُgives expression عنto كوامنِthe hidden depths of لوعتيmy anguish
مقطوعةٌa short poem هيit is آهةُthe sigh of الموجوعone in pain
So there came to you, voicing the hidden depths of my anguish,
A short poem—the sigh of one in pain.
