Sleep, you hungry people, sleep.
May the gods of food guard you.
ناميsleep فإنْfor if لمnot تشبَعِيyou have your fill
نامي فإنْ لم تشبَعِي
مِنْfrom يَقْظةٍwakefulness فمِنَthen from المنامِsleep
مِنْ يَقْظةٍ فمِنَ المنامِ
Sleep; if you have not had your fill
From waking, then have it from dreams.
ناميsleep علىupon زُبَدِbutter الوعودpromises
نامي على زُبَدِ الوعود
يُدَافُis dissolved فيin عَسَلhoney ِ الكلامِwords
يُدَافُ في عَسَل ِ الكلامِ
Sleep upon the butter of promises,
Dissolved in the honey of words.
ناميsleep تَزُرْكِthey will visit you عرائسُbrides الأحلامِdreams
نامي تَزُرْكِ عرائسُ الأحلامِ
فيin جُنْحِthe cover of الظلامِdarkness
في جُنْحِ الظلامِ
Sleep; the brides of dreams will visit you
In the cover of darkness.
تَتَنَوَّريyou behold قُرْصَthe disk of الرغيفِthe loaf
تَتَنَوَّري قُرْصَ الرغيفِ
كَدَوْرةِlike the circle of البدرِthe full moon التمامِperfect fullness
كَدَوْرةِ البدرِ التمامِ
You will behold the round loaf
Like the full moon's perfect circle,
وَتَرَيْand see زرائِبَكِyour pens الفِساحَspacious
وَتَرَيْ زرائِبَكِ الفِساحَ
مُبَلَّطَاتٍpaved بالرُّخَامِwith marble
مُبَلَّطَاتٍ بالرُّخَامِ
And see your spacious pens
Paved with marble.
ناميsleep تَصِحّيgrow well نِعْمَexcellent is نَوْمُthe sleep of
نامي تَصِحّي نِعْمَ نَوْمُ
المرءِa person فيin الكُرَبِdistresses الجِسَامِgrievous
المرءِ في الكُرَبِ الجِسَامِ
Sleep and grow well; how fine is sleep
For someone in grievous distress.
ناميsleep علىupon حُمَةِthe point of القَنَاspears
نامي على حُمَةِ القَنَا
ناميsleep علىupon حَدِّthe edge of الحُسَامthe sword
نامي على حَدِّ الحُسَام
Sleep upon the spears' points;
Sleep upon the sword's edge.
ناميsleep إلىuntil يَوْمِthe day of النشورِresurrection
نامي إلى يَوْمِ النشورِ
ويومَand the day يُؤْذََنُthe call is given بالقِيَامِto rise
ويومَ يُؤْذََنُ بالقِيَامِ
Sleep until the day of resurrection
And the day the call to rise is given.
ناميsleep علىupon المستنقعاتِthe swamps
نامي على المستنقعاتِ
تَمُوجُsurge باللُّجَجwith deep waters ِ الطَّوامِيoverflowing
تَمُوجُ باللُّجَج ِ الطَّوامِي
Sleep upon the swamps,
Surging with overflowing depths,
زَخَّارةbrimming ً بشذاwith the fragrance of الأقَاحِdaisies
زَخَّارة ً بشذا الأقَاحِ
يَمدُّهُaugments it نَفْحُthe waft of الخُزَامِlavender
يَمدُّهُ نَفْحُ الخُزَامِ
Brimming with the scent of daisies,
Fed by wafts of lavender.
ناميsleep علىto نَغَمِthe music of البَعُوضِmosquitoes
نامي على نَغَمِ البَعُوضِ
كأنَّهُas though it were سَجْعُthe cooing of الحَمَامِdoves
كأنَّهُ سَجْعُ الحَمَامِ
Sleep to the mosquitoes' music,
As though it were the cooing of doves.
ناميsleep علىupon هذيthis الطبيعةِِnature
نامي على هذي الطبيعةِِ
لمnot تُحَلَّwas adorned بهwith it “مياميMiami “
لم تُحَلَّ به “ميامي “
Sleep upon this nature,
With which Miami was never adorned.
ناميsleep فقدfor indeed أضفىhas draped “العَرَاءُthe bare outdoors”
نامي فقد أضفى “العَرَاءُ”
عليكِupon you أثوابَthe robes of الغرامِlove
عليكِ أثوابَ الغرامِ
Sleep; the bare outdoors has draped
You in the robes of love.
ناميsleep علىupon حُلُمِthe dream of الحواصدِwomen reaping
نامي على حُلُمِ الحواصدِ
عارياتٍbare للحِزَامِto the waist
عارياتٍ للحِزَامِ
Sleep upon the dream of women reaping,
Bare to the waist,
متراقِصَاتٍdancing والسِّيَاطwhile the whips ُ
متراقِصَاتٍ والسِّيَاط ُ
تَجِدُّpersist earnestly عَزْفَاًin playing ﺑﭑرْتِزَامِwith resounding beats
تَجِدُّ عَزْفَاً بٱرْتِزَامِ
Dancing, while the whips
Persist in playing with resounding beats.
وتغازليand flirt والنَّاعِمَاتwith the soft ones
وتغازلي والنَّاعِمَات
الزاحفاتِcreeping منamong الهوامِvermin
الزاحفاتِ من الهوامِ
And exchange flirtations with the soft
Creeping vermin.
ناميsleep علىupon مَهْدِthe cradle of الأذىharm
نامي على مَهْدِ الأذى
وتوسَّدِيand take as a pillow خَدَّthe cheek of الرَّغَامِdust
وتوسَّدِي خَدَّ الرَّغَامِ
Sleep upon the cradle of harm,
And pillow your head on dust's cheek.
وﭐستفرِشِيand take as a bed صُمَّsolid الحَصَىpebbles
وٱستفرِشِي صُمَّ الحَصَى
وَتَلَحَّفيand wrap yourself in ظُلَلَcanopies الغَمَامِof cloud
وَتَلَحَّفي ظُلَلَ الغَمَامِ
And bed yourself on solid pebbles,
And wrap yourself in canopies of cloud.
ناميsleep فقدfor indeed أنهىhas ended ” مُجِيعُthe starver of
نامي فقد أنهى ” مُجِيعُ
الشَّعْبِthe people ” أيَّامَthe days of الصِّيَامِfasting
الشَّعْبِ ” أيَّامَ الصِّيَامِ
Sleep; the one who starves
The people has ended the days of fasting.
ناميsleep فقدfor indeed غنَّىhas sung ” إلهُthe god of
نامي فقد غنَّى ” إلهُ
الحَرْبِwar” ألْحَانَthe melodies of السَّلامِpeace
الحَرْبِ” ألْحَانَ السَّلامِ
Sleep; the god
Of war has sung the melodies of peace.
ناميsleep جِيَاعَhungry ones الشَّعْبِthe people ناميsleep
نامي جِيَاعَ الشَّعْبِ نامي
الفَجْرُdawn آذَنَhas announced ﺑﭑنْصِرامِits passing
الفَجْرُ آذَنَ بٱنْصِرامِ
Sleep, you hungry people, sleep.
Dawn has announced its passing.
والشمسُand the sun لنْwill not تُؤذيكِhurt you بَعْدُany longer
والشمسُ لنْ تُؤذيكِ بَعْدُ
بماwith what تَوَهَّجblazed منof ضِرَامِfire
بما تَوَهَّج من ضِرَامِ
And the sun will no longer hurt you
With its glowing blaze of fire.
والنورُand light لَنْwill not “يُعْمِيblind” جُفوناًeyelids
والنورُ لَنْ “يُعْمِي” جُفوناً
قدhave جُبِلْنَbeen molded علىto الظلامِdarkness
قد جُبِلْنَ على الظلامِ
And light will not blind eyelids
That have been molded to darkness.
ناميsleep كعهدِكِas is your custom بالكَرَىwith slumber
نامي كعهدِكِ بالكَرَى
وبلُطْفِهِand with its gentleness منsince عَهْدِthe time of “حَامِHam”
وبلُطْفِهِ من عَهْدِ “حَامِ”
Sleep, as is your custom with slumber
And its gentleness since the time of Ham.
ناميsleep.. غَدٌtomorrow يسقيكِwill give you to drink منof
نامي.. غَدٌ يسقيكِ من
عَسَلٍhoney وخَمْرٍand wine ألْفَa thousand جَامِcups
عَسَلٍ وخَمْرٍ ألْفَ جَامِ
Sleep; tomorrow will pour you
A thousand cups of honey and wine,
أجرَthe reward of الذليلِthe abased وبردَand coolness for أفئدةٍhearts
أجرَ الذليلِ وبردَ أفئدةٍ
إلىfor العلياthe heights ظَوَامِيthirsting
إلى العليا ظَوَامِي
The abased one's reward, and coolness for hearts
Thirsting for the heights.

نامي وسيري في منامِكِ
ماas far as استطعتِyou can إلىtoward الأمامِthe front
ما استطعتِ إلى الأمامِ
Sleep, and walk in your dreams
As far forward as you can.
ناميsleep علىupon تلكthose العِظَاتِadmonitions
نامي على تلك العِظَاتِ
الغُرِّradiant منfrom ذاكthat الإمامِimam
الغُرِّ من ذاك الإمامِ
Sleep upon those admonitions,
Those radiant ones from that imam.
يُوصِيكِhe counsels you أنto لاnot تطعميtaste
يُوصِيكِ أن لا تطعمي
منof مالِthe wealth of رَبِّكِyour Lord فيin حُطَامِearthly trifles
من مالِ رَبِّكِ في حُطَامِ
He counsels you not to taste
Of your Lord's wealth in earthly trifles.
يُوصِيكِhe counsels you أنْto تَدَعيleave المباهِجَpleasures
يُوصِيكِ أنْ تَدَعي المباهِجَ
واللذائذَand delights لِلئامِto the base
واللذائذَ لِلئامِ
He counsels you to leave pleasures
And delights to the base.
وتُعَوِّضِيand make up عنfor كلِّall ذلكَthat
وتُعَوِّضِي عن كلِّ ذلكَ
بالسجودِwith prostration وبالقيامِand standing in prayer
بالسجودِ وبالقيامِ
And to make up for all that
With prostration and standing in prayer.
ناميsleep علىupon الخُطَبِthe speeches الطِّوَالِlengthy
نامي على الخُطَبِ الطِّوَالِ
منfrom الغطارفةِthe grandees العِظَامِmighty
من الغطارفةِ العِظَامِ
Sleep upon the lengthy speeches
Of the mighty grandees.
ناميsleep يُسَاقَطْmay it fall رِزْقُكِyour sustenance الموعpromised (beginning)
نامي يُسَاقَطْ رِزْقُكِ الموع
ودُpromised (ending) فوقَكِabove you ﺑﭑنتظامِsteadily
ودُ فوقَكِ بٱنتظامِ
Sleep; let your promised sustenance fall
Steadily upon you.
ناميsleep علىamid تلكَthose المباهجِpleasures
نامي على تلكَ المباهجِ
لمnot تَدَعْleft سَهْمَاًan arrow لِرَامِيfor an archer
لم تَدَعْ سَهْمَاً لِرَامِي
Sleep amid those pleasures
That left no arrow for an archer.
لمnot تُبْقِleft منof “نُقلٍsweetmeats” يسرُّكِthat delight you
لم تُبْقِ من “نُقلٍ” يسرُّكِ
لمnot تَجِئْهُyou reached it .. ومنand of إدَامِrelish
لم تَجِئْهُ .. ومن إدَامِ
They left no delightful sweetmeat
You had not tasted, nor any relish.
بَنَتِbuilt البيوتَhouses وَفَجَّرَتْand made gush
بَنَتِ البيوتَ وَفَجَّرَتْ
جُرْدَthe barren expanses of الصحارىdeserts والمواميand wastelands
جُرْدَ الصحارى والموامي
They built houses and made springs gush
From barren deserts and wastelands.
ناميsleep تَطُفْmay circle حُورُthe houris of الجِنَانِParadise
نامي تَطُفْ حُورُ الجِنَانِ
عليكِaround you منهاfrom them بالمُدَامِwith wine
عليكِ منها بالمُدَامِ
Sleep; the houris of Paradise will circle
Around you with wine from those gardens.
ناميsleep علىupon البَرَصِvitiligo المُبَيَّضِwhitened
نامي على البَرَصِ المُبَيَّضِ
منfrom سوادِكِyour blackness والجُذَامِand leprosy
من سوادِكِ والجُذَامِ
Sleep upon vitiligo, whitened
From your blackness, and upon leprosy.
ناميsleep فكَفُّfor the hand of اللهِGod تغسلُwashes
نامي فكَفُّ اللهِ تغسلُ
عنكِfrom you أدرانَthe stains of السَّقَامِsickness
عنكِ أدرانَ السَّقَامِ
Sleep; God's hand washes
The stains of sickness from you.
ناميsleep فحِرْزُfor the protective charm of المؤمنينَthe believers
نامي فحِرْزُ المؤمنينَ
يَذُبُّdefends عنكِyou علىfor الدَّوَامِever
يَذُبُّ عنكِ على الدَّوَامِ
Sleep; the believers' protective charm
Defends you forever.
ناميsleep فماfor ... is not الدُّنياthe world سوىexcept “جسbridge (beginning)
نامي فما الدُّنيا سوى “جس
رٍbridge (ending)” علىover نَكَدٍmisery مُقَامِraised
رٍ” على نَكَدٍ مُقَامِ
Sleep; the world is only a bridge
Raised over misery.
ناميsleep ولاand do not تتجادليargue
نامي ولا تتجادلي
القولُthe word ماwhat قالتْshe said “حَذَامِHadham”

Exult in the likenesses of self-made men
Among you, above Isam,
الرافعينَthose raising الهَامَheads منfrom جُثَثٍcorpses
الرافعينَ الهَامَ من جُثَثٍ
فََرَشْتِyou spread لَهُمْfor them وهَامِand skulls
فََرَشْتِ لَهُمْ وهَامِ
Who raise their heads from corpses
And skulls you have spread for them.
والواحمينَand those with cravings ومنand from دمائِكِyour blood
والواحمينَ ومن دمائِكِ
يرتويdrinks its fill شَرَهُthe ravenousness of الوِحَامِcraving
يرتوي شَرَهُ الوِحَامِ
And those beset by cravings; from your blood
Their ravenous cravings drink their fill.
ناميsleep فنومُكِfor your sleep خَيْرُthe best ماthat
نامي فنومُكِ خَيْرُ ما
حَمَلَhas borne المُؤَرِّخُthe historian منof وِسَامِdecorations
حَمَلَ المُؤَرِّخُ من وِسَامِ
Sleep; your sleep is the finest
Medal the historian has borne.
ناميsleep جياعَhungry ones الشعبِthe people ناميsleep

بُرِّئْتِyou are absolved منof عَيْبٍfault وذَامِand reproach
بُرِّئْتِ من عَيْبٍ وذَامِ

Sleep; inviolable unity
Demands that you sleep.
ناميsleep جِيَاعَhungry ones الشَّعْبِthe people ناميsleep
نامي جِيَاعَ الشَّعْبِ نامي
النومُsleep مِنamong نِعَمِthe blessings of السلامpeace
النومُ مِن نِعَمِ السلام
Sleep, you hungry people, sleep.
Sleep is among the blessings of peace.
تتوحَّدُunite الأحزابُthe parties فيهin it
تتوحَّدُ الأحزابُ فيه
ويُتَّقَىand is avoided خَطَرُthe danger of الصِدامِcollision
ويُتَّقَى خَطَرُ الصِدامِ
The parties unite in it,
And the danger of collision is avoided.
تَهْدَاgrow calm الجموعُthe crowds بهِthrough it وتَستغنيand have no need
تَهْدَا الجموعُ بهِ وتَستغني
الصُّفوفُthe ranks عَنِof ﭐنقسامِdivision
الصُّفوفُ عَنِ ٱنقسامِ
Through it the crowds grow calm, and
The ranks have no need of division.
إنَّindeed الحماقةَfolly أنْthat تَشُقِّيyou split
إنَّ الحماقةَ أنْ تَشُقِّي
بالنُهوضِby rising عصاthe staff of الوئامِharmony
بالنُهوضِ عصا الوئامِ
It is folly for you to split
The staff of harmony by rising.
والطَّيْشُand recklessness أنthat لاnot تَلْجَئِيyou seek refuge
والطَّيْشُ أن لا تَلْجَئِي
مِنfrom حاكِمِيكِyour rulers إلىto احتكامِarbitration
مِن حاكِمِيكِ إلى احتكامِ
And recklessness is not to seek refuge
From your rulers in arbitration.
النفسُthe soul كالفَرَسِlike the horse الجَمُوحِunruly
النفسُ كالفَرَسِ الجَمُوحِ
وعَقْلُهاand its reason مثلُlike اللجامِthe bridle
وعَقْلُها مثلُ اللجامِ
The soul is like an unruly horse,
And its reason like a bridle.
ناميsleep فإنَّfor indeed صلاحَthe remedy for أمرٍa matter
نامي فإنَّ صلاحَ أمرٍ
فاسدٍcorrupt فيlies in أنthat تناميyou sleep
فاسدٍ في أن تنامي
Sleep; the remedy for a matter
Gone bad is that you sleep.
والعُرْوَةُand the bond الوثقىfirmest إذاif استيقَظْyou awake (beginning)
والعُرْوَةُ الوثقى إذا استيقَظْ
تِyou awake (ending) تُؤذِنُportends بانفصامrupture
تِ تُؤذِنُ بانفصام
And the firmest bond, if you awake,
Portends its own rupture.
ناميsleep وإلاand otherwise فالصُّفوفُthen the ranks
نامي وإلا فالصُّفوفُ
تَؤُولwill come منكِbecause of you إلىto ﭐنقِسامِdivision
تَؤُول منكِ إلى ٱنقِسامِ
Sleep; otherwise the ranks
Will be driven by you into division.
ناميsleep فنومُكِfor your sleep فِتْنَةsedition ٌ
نامي فنومُكِ فِتْنَة ٌ
إيقاظُهاawakening it شرُّthe worst الأثامِof sins
إيقاظُها شرُّ الأثامِ
Sleep; your sleep is a sedition;
Awakening it is the worst of sins.
هلis it? غيرُother than أنْthat تَتَيَقَّظِيyou awaken
هل غيرُ أنْ تَتَيَقَّظِي
فتُعَاوِدِيand then renew كَرَّthe charge of الخِصامِstrife
فتُعَاوِدِي كَرَّ الخِصامِ
Would you do anything but awaken
And renew the charge of strife?
ناميsleep جياعَhungry ones الشعبِthe people ناميsleep
نامي جياعَ الشعبِ نامي
لاdo not تقطعيcut off رِزْقَthe livelihood of الأنامِhumanity
لا تقطعي رِزْقَ الأنامِ
Sleep, you hungry people, sleep.
Do not cut off humanity's livelihood.
لاdo not تقطعيcut off رزقَthe livelihood of المُتَاجِرِthe trader ،
لا تقطعي رزقَ المُتَاجِرِ ،
والمُهَنْدِسِand the engineer ، والمُحَامِيand the lawyer
والمُهَنْدِسِ ، والمُحَامِي
Do not cut off the trader's livelihood,
Nor the engineer's, nor the lawyer's.
ناميsleep تُرِيحِيrelieve الحاكمينَthe rulers
نامي تُرِيحِي الحاكمينَ
منof ﭐشتباكٍstruggle والتحَامِand close combat
من ٱشتباكٍ والتحَامِ
Sleep, and relieve the rulers
Of struggle and close combat.
ناميsleep تُوَقَّmay be shielded بكِthrough you الصَّحَافَةُthe press
نامي تُوَقَّ بكِ الصَّحَافَةُ
منfrom شُكُوكٍdoubts واتِّهَامِand accusation
من شُكُوكٍ واتِّهَامِ
Sleep; through you the press is shielded
From doubts and accusation.
يَحْمَدْmay praise لكِto your credit القانونُthe law صُنْعَthe conduct of
يَحْمَدْ لكِ القانونُ صُنْعَ
مُطَاوِعٍone compliant سَلِسِtractable الخُطَامِat the halter
مُطَاوِعٍ سَلِسِ الخُطَامِ
The law will praise you for the conduct
Of one compliant, tractable at the halter.
خَلِّlet “الهُمَامَthe valiant man” بنومِكِthrough your sleep
خَلِّ “الهُمَامَ” بنومِكِ
يَتَّقِيhe avoids شَرَّthe harm of الهُمَامِthe valiant man
يَتَّقِي شَرَّ الهُمَامِ
Let the valiant man, through your sleep,
Avoid the valiant man's harm.
وتَجَنَّبِيand avoid الشُّبُهَاتِsuspicions فيin
وتَجَنَّبِي الشُّبُهَاتِ في
وَعْيٍawareness سَيُوصَمُwill be branded ﺑﭑجْتِرَامِwith criminality
وَعْيٍ سَيُوصَمُ بٱجْتِرَامِ
And shun the suspicions surrounding
Awareness that will be branded criminal.
ناميsleep فجِلْدُكِfor your skin لاnot يُطِيقُcan endure
نامي فجِلْدُكِ لا يُطِيقُ
إذاwhen صَحَاit wakes وَقْعَthe impact of السِّهَامِarrows
إذا صَحَا وَقْعَ السِّهَامِ
Sleep; your skin cannot endure,
When it wakes, the impact of arrows.
ناميsleep وخَلِّيand leave الناهضينَthose who rise
نامي وخَلِّي الناهضينَ
لوحدِهِمْalone هَدَفَa target for الرَّوَامِيthe archers
لوحدِهِمْ هَدَفَ الرَّوَامِي
Sleep, and leave those who rise
Alone as targets for the archers.
ناميsleep وخَلِّيand leave اللائمينَthe blamers
نامي وخَلِّي اللائمينَ
فماfor what يُضِيرُكِharms you أنthat تُلامِيyou are blamed
فما يُضِيرُكِ أن تُلامِي
Sleep, and leave the blamers;
What harm is it to you to be blamed?
ناميsleep فجدرانُfor the walls of السُّجُونِprisons
نامي فجدرانُ السُّجُونِ
تَعِجُّresound بالموتِwith death الزُّؤَامِsudden and deadly
تَعِجُّ بالموتِ الزُّؤَامِ
Sleep; the prison walls
Resound with sudden death.
ولأنتِand indeed you أحوجُmore in need بعدَafter أتعابِthe labors of
ولأنتِ أحوجُ بعدَ أتعابِ
الرُّضُوخِsubmission إلىof جِمَامِrepose
الرُّضُوخِ إلى جِمَامِ
And you have greater need, after the labors
Of submission, for repose.
ناميsleep يُرَحْmay be relieved بمنامِكِby your sleep “الزُّعَمَleaders (beginning)
نامي يُرَحْ بمنامِكِ “الزُّعَمَ
اءُleaders (ending)” منof داءِa disease عُقَامincurable
اءُ” من داءِ عُقَام
Sleep; your slumber relieves the leaders
Of an incurable disease.
ناميsleep فحقُّكِfor your right لنwill not يَضِيعَbe lost
نامي فحقُّكِ لن يَضِيعَ
ولستِand you are not غُفْلاًunmarked كالسَّوَامِlike grazing livestock
ولستِ غُفْلاً كالسَّوَامِ
Sleep; your right will not be lost,
And you are not unmarked like grazing stock.
إنindeed “الرُّعَاةَthe shepherds” الساهرينَwatchful
إن “الرُّعَاةَ” الساهرينَ
سيمنعونَكِthey will keep you أنْfrom تُضَامِbeing wronged
سيمنعونَكِ أنْ تُضَامِ
Indeed, the watchful shepherds
Will keep you from being wronged.
ناميsleep علىupon جَوْرٍinjustice كماjust as
نامي على جَوْرٍ كما
حُمِلَwas forced الرَّضِيعُthe infant علىinto الفِطَامِweaning
حُمِلَ الرَّضِيعُ على الفِطَامِ
Sleep upon injustice, just as
The infant was forced into weaning.
وَقَعيand fall علىupon البلوىaffliction كماas
وَقَعي على البلوى كما
وَقَعَfell “الحُسامُthe sword” علىupon الحُسامِthe sword
وَقَعَ “الحُسامُ” على الحُسامِ
And fall upon affliction, as
The sword fell upon the sword.
ناميsleep علىupon جَيْشٍan army مِنَof
نامي على جَيْشٍ مِنَ
الآلامِpains محتشدٍmassed لُهَامِimmense
الآلامِ محتشدٍ لُهَامِ
Sleep upon an army of
Pains, massed and immense.
أعطيgive القيادةَcommand للقضاءِto fate
أعطي القيادةَ للقضاءِ
وحَكِّمِيهِand make it arbiter فيover الزِّمَامِthe reins
وحَكِّمِيهِ في الزِّمَامِ
Give command to fate,
And make it arbiter over the reins.
واستسلميand surrender للحادثاتِto events
واستسلمي للحادثاتِ
المشفقاتِcompassionate علىtoward النِّيَامِsleepers
المشفقاتِ على النِّيَامِ
And surrender to events,
Compassionate toward sleepers.
إنَّindeed التيقظَwakefulness لوif علمتِyou knew
إنَّ التيقظَ لو علمتِ
طليعةُthe vanguard of الموتِdeath الزؤامِsudden and deadly
طليعةُ الموتِ الزؤامِ
Indeed, wakefulness, if you knew,
Is the vanguard of sudden death.
والوَعْيُand awareness سَيْفٌa sword يُبْتَلَىis afflicted
والوَعْيُ سَيْفٌ يُبْتَلَى
يومَon the day of التَّقَارُعِclashing ﺑﭑنْثِلامِwith notches
يومَ التَّقَارُعِ بٱنْثِلامِ
And awareness is a sword afflicted
With notches on the day of clashing.
ناميsleep شَذَاةَfragrance الطُّهْرِof purity ناميsleep
نامي شَذَاةَ الطُّهْرِ نامي
ياO دُرَّةًa pearl بينَamid الرُّكَامِrubble
يا دُرَّةً بينَ الرُّكَامِ
Sleep, fragrance of purity, sleep,
O pearl amid the rubble,
ياO نبتةَplant البلوىof affliction وياand O
يا نبتةَ البلوى ويا
ورداًa rose ترعرعَthat grew فيamid ﭐهتضامِoppression
ورداً ترعرعَ في ٱهتضامِ
O plant of affliction, and O
Rose that grew amid oppression,
ياO حُرَّةًa free woman لمnot تَدْرِyou knew ماwhat
يا حُرَّةً لم تَدْرِ ما
معنىthe meaning of ﭐضطغانٍrancor وانتقامِand revenge
معنى ٱضطغانٍ وانتقامِ
O free woman who never knew
The meaning of rancor and revenge,
ياO شُعْلَةَflame النُّورِof light التيthat
يا شُعْلَةَ النُّورِ التي
تُعْشِيdazzles العُيُونَeyes بلاwithout اضطرامِblazing
تُعْشِي العُيُونَ بلا اضطرامِ
O flame of light that
Dazzles eyes without blazing.
سُبحانَglory be to رَبِّكِyour Lord صُورةًan image
سُبحانَ رَبِّكِ صُورةً
تزهوshines proudly علىabove الصُّوَرِthe images الوِسَامِbeautiful
تزهو على الصُّوَرِ الوِسَامِ
Glory to your Lord—an image
That outshines the beautiful images,
إذْwhen تَخْتَفِينَyou hide بلاwithout اهتمامٍconcern
إذْ تَخْتَفِينَ بلا اهتمامٍ
أوor تُسْفِرينَyou unveil yourself بلاwithout لِثَامِa veil
أو تُسْفِرينَ بلا لِثَامِ
When you hide without concern
Or unveil yourself without a veil,
إذْwhen تَحْمِلِينَyou bear الشرَّevil صابرةًpatiently
إذْ تَحْمِلِينَ الشرَّ صابرةً
مِنَfrom الهُوجِthe reckless الطَّغامِrabble
مِنَ الهُوجِ الطَّغامِ
When you patiently bear evil
From the reckless rabble.
بُوركْتِblessed are you منby “شَفْعٍa pair ” فإنْand if
بُوركْتِ من “شَفْعٍ ” فإنْ
نزلَdescends البلاءُaffliction فمنthen by “تُؤَامِtwins”
نزلَ البلاءُ فمن “تُؤَامِ”
Blessed are you by a pair; and if
Affliction descends, then by twins.
كمhow much تصمُدِينَyou stand firm علىagainst العِتَابِrebuke
كم تصمُدِينَ على العِتَابِ
وتَسْخَرينَand scoff منat الملامِblame
وتَسْخَرينَ من الملامِ
How steadfastly you withstand rebuke,
And scoff at blame!
سُبحانَglory be to ربِّكِyour Lord صورةًan image
سُبحانَ ربِّكِ صورةً
هيit والخطوبُand calamities علىin انسجامِharmony
هي والخطوبُ على انسجامِ
Glory to your Lord—an image
At one with calamities.
ناميsleep جياعَhungry ones الشعبِthe people ناميsleep
نامي جياعَ الشعبِ نامي
النومُsleep أَرْعَىmore observant للذِّمَامِof obligations
النومُ أَرْعَى للذِّمَامِ
Sleep, you hungry people, sleep.
Sleep better honors obligations.
والنومُand sleep أَدْعَىmore conducive للنُزُولِto submission
والنومُ أَدْعَى للنُزُولِ
علىto السَّكِينَةِtranquility والنِّظَامِand order
على السَّكِينَةِ والنِّظَامِ
And sleep is more conducive to submission
To tranquility and order.
ناميsleep فإنَّكِfor you فيamid الشَّدائدِhardships
نامي فإنَّكِ في الشَّدائدِ
تَخْلُصِينَescape منfrom الزِّحَامِcrowding
تَخْلُصِينَ من الزِّحَامِ
Sleep; amid hardships you
Escape the crowding.
ناميsleep جياعَhungry ones الشَّعْبِthe people لاdo not
نامي جياعَ الشَّعْبِ لا
تُعْنَيْbe concerned بِسَقْطٍwith trifles منof كلاميmy words
تُعْنَيْ بِسَقْطٍ من كلامي
Sleep, you hungry people; do not
Mind the trifles in my words.
ناميsleep فماfor ... not كانَwas القَصِيدُthe poem
نامي فما كانَ القَصِيدُ
سوىexcept خُرَيْزٍtiny beads فيin نظامِa string
سوى خُرَيْزٍ في نظامِ
Sleep; the poem was nothing
But tiny beads upon a string.
ناميsleep فقدfor indeed حُبَّis loved العَمَاءُblindness
نامي فقد حُبَّ العَمَاءُ
عَنِto المساوىءfaults والتَّعَامِيand feigned blindness
عَنِ المساوىء والتَّعَامِي
Sleep; now beloved are blindness
To faults and the pretense of not seeing.
ناميsleep فبئسَfor wretched are مَطَامِعُthe hopes of الواعِيthe aware (beginning)
نامي فبئسَ مَطَامِعُ الواعِي
نَthe aware (ending) منfrom سَيْفٍa sword كَهَامِblunted
نَ من سَيْفٍ كَهَامِ
Sleep; wretched are the hopes of the aware
In a blunted sword.
ناميsleep: إليكِto you تحيّتِيmy greeting
نامي: إليكِ تحيّتِي
وعليكِand upon you، نائمةًas you sleep سلاميmy peace
وعليكِ، نائمةً سلامي
Sleep; to you my greeting,
And upon you, asleep, my peace.
ناميsleep جياعَhungry ones الشَّعْبِthe people ناميsleep
نامي جياعَ الشَّعْبِ نامي
حَرَسَتْكِmay they guard you آلهةُgods الطعامِfood
حَرَسَتْكِ آلهةُ الطعامِ
Sleep, you hungry people, sleep.
May the gods of food guard you.
