Peace to you, O new generation!

The years have cast their weight upon you.

And calamities hurled their chests upon you,

Immense, born of the wrongs the heedless wrought.

Upon you—the noblest to rise—were cast

The twin burdens of hopes and pains.

So the painful past hurled its burden upon you,

And the smiling future gazed toward you.

And the present, trembling between them in sorrow

And yearning that sets dreams aflutter.

The traitors cast upon you the yield of their

Heedless wandering, straying far, grazing, and pasturing others.

And the loyal hope for the dispelling of

Afflictions, and for darkness to give birth to morning.

    O new generation, how often

Have labels clung to those they do not belong to!

And how often tyrants have gone too far and spread rumors

    Against reformers, raising an uproar.

They called you a "destroyer" because you loathe

What oppression ordained and what crime wrought.

And because you demanded justice as a policy

From him in whose hands lie annulment and ratification.

And you were angered to find the subjects treated as booty

In the shepherds' hands, as though they were livestock.

And you condemned the fact that rule, in their lexicon,

Is a whip drawn taut, lust, and ferocity.

Be at ease, for all of that is slander

That perishes; striving and bold action endure.

And so every "destroyer" of a vice

Is a builder, and every "builder" of it a destroyer.
