O Qais, O gentleness of spring,

and the blaze of its fiery splendor.

O Qais, O whisper of the beloved, melting

    in the beloved's ear.

O Qais, O shepherds' chant, spreading

    through the fertile field.

O Qais, O plaintive song of the nightingale,

    calling to the tender bough.

O Qais, O dream of maidens

    who throng around the well.

O Qais, O essence of freshness,

distilled into the most delicate cup.

O Qais, O melody of life,

and the steady note of hope.

O Qais, O gleam of radiance.

O Qais, O waft of perfumes.

O Qais, do you know what

scars you have left behind you,

and what you have flooded the house with:

a flood of yearning and heart-throbs,

and what you have brought to a bereaved mother,

burning with grief, and a bereft man seeking God's reward?

Your parents, mourning you, O Qais,

their cherished child, are worn out.

They seek solace in a glimpse of your face

    at sunrise and at sunset.

And they beguile sleep about you

    with your merry, joyous apparition.

And in mutual reproach they question

themselves, as one beset by doubt would.

    They exchange their sorrow

like a stranger's lament to another stranger.

    O Qais, your mother still

    lives on deceitful hope.

She yearns for the knock at the door with each coming

of yours, and with each going.

And she keeps questioning a bedchamber

of yours about your slumber and waking.

O Qais, O emblem of martyrdom,

    perfumed with crimson blood.

You honored, with the shroud stained

with your blood, and the dust-covered cheek,

a homeland that, through sons like you,

    seeks refuge from calamities,

and returns to them, in shares,

the share they bestowed on it,

with glory that the ages confer

    upon them, age after age,

and laurel they braid for them,

lush with the overflow of hearts.

O Qais, O Qais, who threatened

    wars in your youth,

the people will take vengeance on those who shot you,

in the distant future or the near.
