O Indonesia, if your sons fight to the death,

then war is your mother and struggle your father.

And you have a history upon whose pages

a fragrance wafts from spilled blood.

And it is as though, from the forenoon’s radiance and shimmer,

a light shines upon it from your valley.

O daughter of a second paradise, with all that is desired

by a soul, and all that nature has cast into you,

and with its surfaces and depths flowing

with gold, molten and cast in ingots,

with your dense, entwined growth when it darkens,

and the laughing, bare reaches of your sunlit land—

its shadows have spread back over the colonizers,

and over their queens and kings.

O daughter of all that, and mother of every man scooping

    amid his misery, and every starving pauper;

O mother of everyone driven from his family,

    who was granted paradise and lived like a slave;

Whom does the struggle befit, if it does not take shape

as a crown befitting the heads of your people?

In every grave among your graves is a wandering spirit,

walking toward you, and a crier calling you,

to bind your present, steeped in blood,

to the aching, sorrowful part of your past.

And from nature comes a defender of your sons,

that they may take from you what she gives you.

Honor forbids you to feed others from your mouth,

while they are denied even a mouthful from your mouth.

O Indonesia! Among created beings there is partnership:

nothing but God is without a partner.

They made you burn in the same hellfire that scorched the East,

and branded you with a branding iron of its humiliation.

    ولقد يكون ارقَّ من يسقيك

    And they made you drink from a cup like the one we were made to drink;

and whoever makes you drink may indeed be gentler.

And you likewise, as the East has labored to bring forth vengeance,

are in labor upon interlocked spears.
