كماas ذوىwithered الغصنُthe branch ممنوعاًdeprived عنof الماءِwater
My youth has withered without enjoying happiness,
as a branch withers when deprived of water.

كفُّthe hand اللياليof the nights وأجرتهاand made them flow بأقذاءwith impurities
The hand of time blocked the clear channels of life before me
and set them flowing with impurities.

From the hardship of calamities that wore me down
to further hardship, and from one illness to another.

Twenty-six years: their sum has been
youth still tender, yet far from carefree.

Life is but a beautiful woman who spurns her suitors,
courted by friends and enemies alike.

She may deny herself worthy admirers full of longing,
and perhaps give herself to those unworthy.

In either case, the one who loves her remains
tormented in spirit, plainly afflicted.

If you marvel at the complaints of a spirited poet
who is seen night after night dressed like a mourner,
فلستُfor I am not أجهلُignorant of ماwhat فيin العيشlife منof نِعمٍblessings
اناI الخبيرُthe one experienced بأشياءٍin many things وأشياءand more things
I am not blind to life's blessings;
I know a thing or two.
ولاand I do not أحبُّlove ظلامَthe darkness القبرof the grave يغمُرنيengulfing me
أناI الخبيرُthe one experienced بأشياءٍin many things وأشياءand more things

Nor do I wish the darkness of the grave to engulf me;
I know a thing or two.

كطالبِlike a seeker الماءof water لمَّاwhen غَصَّhe choked بالماءon water
Rather, I and the world, with all its trials, are
like someone seeking water who chokes on water.
أُريدُهاI seek it لمسرّاتٍfor joys ، فتعكِسُهاbut it reverses them
وللهناءِand for happiness ، فَتثنيهِbut it turns it لايذاءinto harm
I seek life for its joys, but it turns them around;
I seek it for happiness, but it turns that into harm.

I have looked back at my forebears and never found
one who was not deeply attached to the world.

who was never ugly for a day,

portraying her now as a chameleon, at times
as a serpent, and at others as a tarantula,

do not believe them: life would have no defect
but for the falsehoods of the rabble and the ignorant.

People whom life did not favor condemned it;
they knew nothing beyond the milk of camels and sheep.

A crowd followed them blindly,
wandering without purpose like one stumbling in the dark.
ولوand if بدَتْit appeared لهمُto them الدُّنياthe world بزيِنتهاin its splendor

Had the world appeared to them in all its splendor,
they would have greeted it with reverence and praise.
لمdid not تكفِنيsuffice me نكباتٌcalamities قدindeed أُخذتُI was seized بهاby them
حَتىuntil نُكبتُI was afflicted بأفكاريbecause of my thoughts وآرائيand my opinions
The calamities that befell me were not enough:
I was also afflicted because of my thoughts and opinions.

I have hopes for life that, if I voiced them,
would meet a clamor of sophistries.

But if someone came to debate me with proof,
I would say, 'Welcome, my lord, with all respect.'

Palaces have been built on the edges of cliffs, furnished
with everything the eye of a beholder could desire.

Within them are the most excessive cravings of the soul;
within them are strange stories and reports.

Within them, pleasures and joys rage
through that hypocrite's soul like a fierce wind.

Yet if you speak a word that makes clear
life's gentleness, whether plainly or by suggestion,

they rise against you with abuse and obscenity
and declare a truly fierce war on you.
