If the reins of the masses were in my hand,
If the reins of the masses were in my hands,
I would lead my homelands along the path of rebellion.
I would have led my homeland on the path of rebellion.

إذن عَلِمَتْ أنْ لا حياةَ لأمّةٍ

تُحاولُ أن تَحيا بغير التجدُّد
Then they would know that no nation has life
For then it would know that no nation can live
if it seeks to live without renewal.
That tries to live without renewal.

Were command in my palm, I would muster a force
If it were up to me, I would prepare a force
to accustom this people to what it is unaccustomed to.
That would accustom this people to what they are not accustomed to.

Against every reactionary with a thousand opponents
one seen discontented today, who weeps over tomorrow.
Who seems angry today and cries over tomorrow.

and oh, how often I strike—but without a hand.
And perhaps I slip but without using my hands.

whenever you test them, you find only cowards.
When you test them, you see only laziness.

By your life, renewal is not in a young man's being seen
By your life, renewal is not that the youth is seen
roaming as he pleases, dissolute, and feeding himself.
Going as he wishes, dissolute and overfed,

But that his mind is free, adorned
by experiences like a blazing star.
With experiences, like a blazing star.

Lands advanced when they shed the robe of stagnation;
Homelands have set out, when they cast off the garment of stagnation,
they deemed casting it off imperative, and did not hesitate.
They saw its removal as inevitable, so they did not hesitate.

Yet my country remained under oppression, made to suffer
And they decided on the injustice to my country, allotting it
whatever abasement the enslaver's hand desired.
Whatever they wished from perdition, by the hand of the worshipper.

Oh, what a people—slowly toward its own good
So what a people, slow for its own good,
it walked, yet swiftly toward blindness and torpor!
Who walked eagerly into blindness and numbness.

Whenever called to reform, its unruly spirit balks;
When called to reform, its wings recoil,
but if led by the rope of charlatanry, it yields.
And if tied in the rope of the deceiver, it pulls.

You will find what arouses sorrow from every grave.

You will find a nest of delusions, a lodging for superstition,
You will find a den of illusions and a dumping ground of superstitions
and varied sorrows that end where they begin.
And various passions that end where they begin.

They surrendered, and customs enslaved them,
They surrendered and so they were enslaved by customs
making them walk among people with a captive's gait.
That walked among the people like those in shackles.

By your life, the people need an awakening
By your life, the people lack an awakening
that rouses every ill-omened, grim-faced man among them.
That would stir in them every frozen will.

Or death, where effort ends,

So you are excused - so choose which garment you will wear.

Otherwise, no awakening can be hoped for a nation

That stands on this shaky foundation.

And what do you expect of a country pulled by a hair
is led, and a people guided by those who mislead?
And a people guided by the misguided?

They stand over people's very breaths, monopolizing them;
They have stood over the breaths and monopolized them
whichever path a person takes, he is driven away.
So what path can a person take to be expelled?

And every one of them, if his nights grow serene,
And none of them but one who, if his nights
grows insolent—or, if they sour, runs riot.
Are made pleasant for him, is boastful, or if soured, complains.

Leave the people to reform, to take their path
do not lie in wait for the reformers.
And do not stand in ambush for the reformers.

And do not plant your thorns in their way
to hinder them—whoever sows thorns will reap them.
You hinder them – he who plants thorns harvests wounds.

All that the Prophet Muhammad deplores—
Is it not what the Prophet Muhammad complains of
do you declare it lawful in the name of the Prophet Muhammad?
That you make lawful in the name of Muhammad?

The Book was not revealed this way
nor did religious law pronounce thus for an appointed time.
Nor did the Law speak of this promise.

When I cry out, you say, 'The appointed time has not yet come.'
If I am right, you say the time has not yet come
You want to fill bellies until that appointed time.
You want to satiate your stomachs for the promise.

Your guidance, O God, for the bewildered people!
May God guide you, people gone astray
Aid the steps of those rising, and guide them aright.
Help the steps of the risers and make them firm.

My tongue recoils from flattery, for I
Inspire my tongue not to flatter
see myself, even if I flatter, as not immortal.
I see myself and if I flatter, I will not last.

And suppose my frankness brings ruin upon me—
Grant that my honesty betrays me
does the life of one who dissembles last forever?
Can the life of one who flatters be eternal?

I will not, even were the stars my necklaces,
For even if the stars were my necklaces
obey, like a blind man, the right hand of my guide.
I would not obey like a blind follower.

your waywardness—or that I myself am not rightly guided.
Your misguidance, or that I am not guided.

But if I discern right guidance, I comply
Rather, if I see right, I persevere in it
with it; and whenever I grasp error, I turn away.
And when I gain error I distance myself.

Will support truth or assail a transgressor?

Why, then, should I deliberately wrong my talents
Why would I deliberately impair my talents
and lead a free soul to the worst watering place?
And lead a free soul to the worst fate?

I have a tongue that has never betrayed me at a gathering,
I have a tongue that has not failed me in any gathering
just as Amr's sword never betrayed him in battle.
Like the sword of Amr that did not fail him in any battle.
