جَمُّ المساوي آثِمٌ أشِرُ
I will not lie to you: I am human,
I do not lie to you, I am but a man,
Abounding in faults, sinful, wanton.
Whose sins are many, evil is my clan,

نفسي وليس رفيقيَ النظَر
Love, while I thirst, does not temper
Love is not thirst that gets satisfied,
My soul, nor is gazing my companion.
It is my soulmate, not just a friend.

How often I have seen what distresses me,
And yet I have seen what I'm most vexed by,
And wished that I had no sight,
I wish that I were blind and could not spy,

Or that I were a stone—and how often
Or that I were a stone, for rocks are calmer,
A stone has been more at ease than I.
Than I, though man is higher than a stone.

فإذا عداه فكلّهُ ضَجر
Nothing delights it only to deny itself to it,
Nothing pleases him, he is ever glum,
So that, when it passes it by, it is wholly vexed.
Once gone from him, all becomes tiresome.

And how often I have attained what I saw,
And yet I've gained what I did spy upon,
And blessed a sight followed by fulfillment.
So I'm thankful for the vision I have won.

My lips are sealed, my lady, but my eyes
In the eyes are knowledge and its telling.
And brow do speak of mysteries inside.

So call the blazing glances to witness,
So witness my fierce, red, merciless stares,
Red, sparing nothing and leaving nothing.
That leave nothing behind and nothing spares.

And from a restless longing in the soul,
We both know what clothes and belts may hide,
Suppressed, the sparks fly.
Like embers we glow with passion inside.

Why pretend, why force yourself in vain,
The clothes contain and the wraps enfold.
To hide what you know you can't contain?

And in us equally—there is no shame in us—
The hypocrite lies, but I've no patience,
The mute ember blazes.
For such a waist as yours in constrictions.

So why do you strive, against your will,
And foolish is he who is satisfied,
To conceal what cannot be concealed?
By your honeyed words and dark eyelids.

The hypocrite lies: there is no forbearance before
Your youth melts all his piousness away,
A figure like yours when clasped.
Leaving lust and nothing grave or staid.

The spirit rises when you bless its hour,
Your sweet talk and evening conversation.
Though all the world is weak and overpowered.

How precious your embrace which I have won,
In those who profess it—your blooming youth.
While events make others come undone.

A dream of pleasures that I miss throughout,
Its heels—languid glances and bashfulness.
And without which I'm destitute and downed.

The soul stands lofty when it finds happiness
In you is magic which I can't define,
With you for an hour; the universe is scorned.
Or safely hope for or securely pine.

Your hand holds my forelock, mine your waist,
All that events and reversals rob us of.
Victorious or routed in this haste.

If I should win, the cushions and rug fine
Its like, and stands in need of it.
Are best for bards stretched out in recline.

Description: neither safety nor caution.
I'll pardon him, though he leave me mangled.

Her hand upon my forelock, her waist
I grabbed her "breast" fearing it would shake free,
In my hand—a victor and a vanquished one.
Like a great orb slipping down from a tree.

So if I won, the finest pillow
In private, images of bliss I sustain,
For a poet is belly-folds and navels.
As moans escape her, ecstasies we gain.

In whom I glory, who pardons and forgives me.
And she complies, fulfilling all with ease:

I grasped her breasts, and I believe
"You've tried to craft verses as you desire,
I feared the globes might roll away.
Choosing what you fancy, like plucking a lyre."

In what I asked of her, and to obey:
For that rose and heart alike were full."

Choosing what you desire and inventing?”
Where all the sweetest pleasures can be discovered."

God be praised for that coming to drink and departure!
And sublime is the judgment of fate in this endeavor."

That is a testing ground for the choicest pleasures.
For you are desire incarnate, nothing could savor."

Like the tenderest of blossoms unfolding.
Though with you, wisdom is brief and strong."
