وقفَ الدلالُ عليه والغَنجُ
How splendid a homeland you are, Tangier!
The land of your charm, Tanj, is a homeland
Charm and coquetry have settled upon it.
The guide stopped at it, and the melody too
الليلُnight عنfrom جفنيكِyour two eyelids منطلِقissuing forth
الليلُ عن جفنيكِ منطلِق
والصبحُand dawn عنfrom نهديكِyour two breasts منفرجunfolding
والصبحُ عن نهديكِ منفرج
Night issues from your eyelids,
The night departs from your eyelids
And dawn unfolds from your breasts.
And the dawn reveals your breasts
تتخالفcontrast الألوانُthe colors فيin شفقtwilight
تتخالف الألوانُ في شفق
ويلمهاand gathers them غسقdusk فتنمزجso they blend
ويلمها غسق فتنمزج
Colors contrast in the twilight,
The colors intertwine in the sunset
And dusk gathers them, so they blend.
And the dusk brings them together
مرجٌa meadow منof " البحرينthe two seas " فوقهماabove them both
مرجٌ من " البحرين " فوقهما
ضوءlight النجومthe stars يرِفُّflickers والسُّرُجُand the lamps
ضوء النجوم يرِفُّ والسُّرُجُ
A meadow of the two seas; above them
A meadow from the Two Seas above them
Starlight flickers, and so do the lamps.
The light of the stars flickers and the lamps
تهفوyearn الرمالُthe sands إليهtoward it ناعمةsoft
تهفو الرمالُ إليه ناعمة
والسفحُand the slope والأمواجand the waves .. وand " القبجal-Qabj "
والسفحُ والأمواج .. و " القبج "
The soft sands yearn toward it,
The sands yearn for it softly
And the slope, the waves, and al-Qabj.
And the slopes and the waves.. and Al Qabj
صفتِgrew serene النفوسthe souls فلفّهاso it enfolded them مرحٌmirth
صفتِ النفوس فلفّها مرحٌ
يهفوwafts بهاwith them، وتلاقتand met one another المُهَجthe hearts
يهفو بها، وتلاقت المُهَج
Souls grew serene, so mirth enfolded them;
The souls lined up, so a joy enveloped them
It wafts them along, and hearts have met.
Yearning for them, and the passions met
فيدٌso a hand علىupon خَصرٍa waist، ولاand no رصدsurveillance
فيدٌ على خَصرٍ، ولا رصد
وفمٌand a mouth علىupon ثغرlips، ولاand no حرجshame
وفمٌ على ثغر، ولا حرج
So a hand upon a waist, with no one watching,
A hand on a waist, and no refusal
And a mouth upon lips, with no shame.
And a mouth on lips, and no objection
وعلىand upon العُيونthe eyes منfrom الأسىsorrow رهجُdust
وعلى العُيون من الأسى رهجُ
وعلىand upon الوجوهthe faces منfrom الجوىanguished longing وهجa glow
وعلى الوجوه من الجوى وهج
And on the eyes lies the dust of sorrow,
And in the eyes, the mark of sorrow
And on the faces, the glow of anguished longing.
And on the faces, the sign of love and passion
تُغْفِينَyou doze والأطيافُand the phantoms حالمةٌdreaming
تُغْفِينَ والأطيافُ حالمةٌ
فيin كلّevery مغنىًdwelling فيكwithin you تختلجquiver
في كلّ مغنىً فيك تختلج
You doze, while the dreaming phantoms
You sleep while the shadows dream
Quiver in every dwelling within you.
