How hard it is for my tongue to lament you,

and how grievous your loss to my whole being!

And how can he bear to give his pain a voice—

a bereaved man whose heart and tongue are paralyzed?

And how piercing your loss, now that

victory's steeds have undertaken the plunge into the fray!

And the East, whose lamp you were yesterday—

its air is thick, its smoke spread far and wide.

The covetous have fallen upon its soil,

as flies come and go upon a dining table.

Frontier strongholds scowl at their advancing hosts,

and the heights and harbors shudder.

And how far removed your fate is from mine,

and how near your place is to my own!

I listened, stunned, to the one who announced your death,

as though I had listened to one announcing my own.

And I had sensed that a calamity was there,

and knew not its true nature until it struck me.

I struck my palms together in anguish,

but have two palms ever brought a distant one near?

And I went on—what a wound within my heart!—

    biting my fingertips in self-deception.

And a phantom from memory embraced me,

broken in spirit, choking on humiliation.

Its sides stream blood in yearning

for fleeting moments and lovely delights,

    بها " لُبنانُ" مُزدَهِرُ المغاني

    for those radiant nights,

    with Lebanon's haunts in bloom;

for evening talk, as though it bore, from what

you scattered of fragrance, the perfume of gardens.

A phantom: out of despair and yearning I began

to divert my soul through it from what my eyes beheld.

    It stirred in me emotions—violent,

and tumultuous, and gentle, and tender.

And it freed memories from their reins,

    that shake the soul, unbridled.

I gathered their perfumes, then inhaled from them

the fragrance of purified anger and tenderness.

Both of us are bereft of speech; upon each

the phantoms of death have laid their necks.

I cursed language—how cruel and tyrannous,

and how defiant of the forms of meaning!

It demanded an interpreter of me on your day,

while I sought refuge from it with an interpreter.

So, O Umar of struggle, when complaint is voiced

    by the brave of heart at the coward's weakness;

and O Umar of eloquence, when nourishment is drawn

    by the lean young from plump ideas;

and O Umar of loyalty, when forsaken

in adversity is one man by another:

You would have been safeguarded from death, had there been the means—

but where are those able to give that guarantee?

And we—while life is bound for ruin,

and every gathering has its appointed term—

are truly despoiled as we pass evening and morning,

while you lie apart in a deserted place.

I grieved for those devoted to you in love,

and those who singled out your merit for their embrace:

your companions when hopes were in bloom,

and your armor when spear-thrusts clashed.

I loved you smiling, while care walked

across the features of your face with steady poise.

as though you and your cares had laid a wager.

The mouth is held shut, so lips disclose nothing,

and the secret would remain hidden but for the two eyes.

gentle in shade, with swaying fruits.

and you alone know what you endure.

And how precious is manhood in lips

    sealed over a guarded pain,

and rich in meanings, with carefully chosen

words in them, lofty in structure.

where language shines forth, revealing pearls.

for you are flashes of thought from far and near.

so, in anguish, they gaze toward you.

barren of dawn, followed by no second night.

tickled by hopes of glad tidings.

Hopes that a rule might govern the people,

under which each person would spend the night in safety.

and one who leaves enduring noble deeds does not perish.

the fruits of thought hang ripe and within reach.

and the Nile spouted forth a flood of eloquence.

And I came, lowering my gaze in modesty:

this is what the Two Rivers spout forth!

If grief responds willingly in calamity,

then poetry is excused for its balking.
