Accursed be you, O dwelling grounds!

Visiting her from nearby is like visiting from afar.

Vertigo flutters in the head of one who longs for her,

and, fearing her, he is stricken with vertigo.

It is as though your phantom, passing through a garden

lush with greenery, turns it into barren wastes.

Accursed be you, naked, yet clothed

in the vilest mantle of history's curse.

The sphere of ill omens bid for her; she was disfigured

by what the cycle of the moons brings about.

For twenty centuries she has dragged across her surface

the bloodied trains of the processions of the free.

Never were those who, within her, lie heavy upon reason

and upon genius sated by their burning thirst of hate.

    Arab civilization collapsed upon her,

and Ashur alone held the monuments.

And she went to the valley of Abqar and took it upon herself

    to torment every overwhelming conqueror:

    Ibn al-Muqaffaʿ and Ibn Quddus,

and al-Hallaj, and Bashshar, the inspired one,

and him who filled the world and preoccupied its people,

and every sphere of hers that revolves,

Abu Muhassad—as she severed his backbone—

No disgrace has ever known a disgrace like this.

The heads of the virtuous were trampled, while perfumed

were the feet of wicked, evil men within her.

And parceled out as plunder, in shreds, to every effeminate man

were the limbs of a virile, roaring creator.

May you be no more, O stone, around which strutted Baghdad-style

    idol-worshippers, themselves stones within it.
