I seek protection for rhymes, radiant in their openings,

    a musician's melodies, a warbler's songs,

    sweet upon reciters' lips, penetrating

into the heart, their magic flowing through the ears.

You almost feel the heart between their lines,

and wipe the tracks of tears with your sleeves.

I have wearied of the reproachers' blame, and their words:

Will you never return to song?

Have you abandoned poetry without trying,

or did poetry refuse to yield when you tried?

Have those copious emotions run dry,

gentle in their courses, guileless at their sources?

Answer, O heart: I do not speak

unless I consult you, nor do I listen.

And speak, for these people know only what appears,

while the hidden motives escape them.

They think poetry a fire-seeker's flame,

whenever they want it, a merchant's wares.

Answer, O heart: some people rejoiced

at the crushing calamities that grieved you.

With what terrified your very core, you eased distress,

and healed pains with those masterpieces.

Cruel are your many admirers: they

deem you useless unless you burn.

The things that set me ablaze have not left me; rather,

I have bowed so low that their embers no longer scorch me.

O poetry, hasten and capture from my burning pains

fugitives that cannot be caught unless you hasten.

They piled one atop another, and there lay buried

one lament beneath another, bleeding at their seams.

Burst open sores whose confinement cannot be borne,

nor are they such as lancets can ward off.

O morsel of the heart, whose space is neither

    broad nor its reaches vast,

are you a desert for these emotions,

    its breezes convulsed by gales?

I carried you until forty, as though

I had carried my enemy since drinking wet nurses' milk.

You made me graze the worst, most pestilential pastures,

and led me to plague-ridden watering places.

And I silenced reason within me, surrendering

the reins of obedience to a blind emotion.

I looked around me, gathering scattered fragments

    of memories departing and returning.

I avoided them for ages, fearing their awakening,

    though they are counted among my own creations;

though, when poetry lacks a tributary,

their ghosts appear before it in the vanguard.

Some, by their impact, lay upon the brow

one hand, and another between the heart and ribs.

Some have a tale that makes one weep and laugh,

so a mouth smiles beneath tearful eyelids.

And some, as you approach, recede far away—

their looming forms like a deceptive mirage.

And some, when they draw near, bring you

no contentment, nor, when distant, any grief.

Prison held a group of them, and another descended

into the grave—the mother of all calamities.

My hand incurred their harshest; what it wrought

of harm is something my ears shrink from.

And many a buried hurt that pardon could not appease,

I approached with patience as my intercessor.

It invaded my heart until it softened its flint,

and tainted my blood until it warped my nature.

There grew in a heart drowning in strife,

brimming over, steeped in the venom of resentments,

    تَقَمَّصْنَني يَرْقُبْنَ يومَ التراجُع

    lurking forces of hatred, sin, and vengeance;

they took possession of me, awaiting the day of retreat.

I told them: O harlots of the bedchambers,

dress yourselves as chaste, devout women.

Dwell in a breast as desolate as graveyards,

and appear on a face as blackened as hearthstones.

Be a glitter in my eyes, a tremor

in my body, a lingering quiver in my fingers.

Terrify my dreams, and drive away the wraith

of sleep that glides through slumbering eyes.

Mix deadly poison into my life, turning it

into a pit of cruelty and estrangement.

Teach me how to bottle up my gloom,

and how to force the pretender's laugh.

And erupt, hideous, when an outlet is decreed,

and say: Are we not the offspring of atrocities?

Are we not a mixture of a gloater's baseness,

    a traitor's wickedness, and a craven's rule?

Others milked the udders of advantage,

while I came away with a load of 'man of letters' and 'brilliant.'

I consoled my children with the worst consolation:

their father's immortality in the pages of anthologies.

I reviewed my poems as a record and found

nothing there but what destroys the reviewer's composure.

To one who questions gray hair before its time,

I say: This is the dust of battles.

I laid down my traveler's staff and, weary, chose

    a conformist's life in place of a fighter's.

I followed the path of the two that best sustained my heart,

    though neither fulfilled my ambitions.

Cowardice shielded me from troubles and harm,

yet cowardice's freedman finds refuge in repeated deaths.

I saw with my own eyes when I distrusted my hearing,

the marks of good fortune on humbled cheeks.

I searched intently among many hands,

and found the highest was the hand that pledged allegiance.

Centuries set me far from Zuhayr, yet I was brought back,

against my will, by his knowledge of human nature.

Today, having learned to flatter, I am better off

and better spoken of than when I would not flatter.

An ember has died; may God never rekindle its fire,

if it must disturb my resting places.

Yes, I thanked life that its thread was lengthened

until it granted me a respite for retreat.

I found myself, while others drank and drank their fill,

    eager for life's contested dregs.

I wished that she who bore the anguish of my ambition

would return to enjoy the ease of my humility.

For he whose misdeeds she endured has had erased,

by his abasement, the guilt of the proud, defiant man.
