Your slender figure has wronged me,

and your luxuriant beauty has set me aflame.

And it troubles me that that corset

    constricts your delicate waist.

And your hip has gone mad with rage:

a plump one challenged by a lean one.

Let all eyes be ransom for your eyes!

Has wine mingled with their eyelids?

It is as though I see playful kisses

dripping from between their inner corners.

And the tremor of your heavy-laden lashes

    swears to their overwhelming burden.

As night poured out its fearsome blackness,

your thick, dark hair poured out passion.

It massed like the deep shade of clouds,

and through it sorrows began to lift.

The braid's loose strands put pride to flight over

the full moon's circle, as it is curled.

And the jewelry upon both wrists began

    to play its sweetest melodies.

    And this close-clinging fabric almost

cried out for joy against your breasts,

and nearly divulged the tale of Paradise

and the secrets of its adorned Kawthar.

O my soul's desire, desires fling themselves

at your feet and beg for tenderness.

And at your hands' command, as you desire,

a life is renewed or perishes.

O my soul's desire, across your cheeks

    shadows of longing creep.

Come, let us save an eye where

sparks fly, and a mouth that trembles,

and [let us free] a soul from captivity,

surging in a cage of blood, dragging its chains.

Come, let me give you a taste; for all the fruits

quiver, and their blossoms are plucked.

A struggle that drags on—how often you aim at

the soul within me, and how often I aim

at your body! How well you know

where to cut, and how well I know.

And between these two, time walks on,

and destroys kings and appoints successors.

Lean close with your breast, life's wellspring,

and let a thirsty mouth be given a sip.

    يَفِضْ عَسلٌ منهما يَرعُف

    And draw the robe away from the two buds;

honey will overflow from them, gushing.

And guide my palm to clear the way

for a storm that rages through them both.

Lean close, for the spring of this beauty

lasts a while, then is drained dry.

And this youth, its reins let loose,

will be reined in and halted.

Lean close, for tomorrow's sword is drawn

over us, and Fate's hearing is keen.

Promise, then do not break your word, for Death,

your twin in violence, never breaks his.

I have known the violent turns of events:

    what beguiles and what shatters.

And from lissome women I have tasted the worst poisons—

a taste that kills and yet is found delightful.

And I have plunged into love's deep waters,

tossed on the back of a female jinn.

No, by love, my heart has never been stirred

by one gentler than you, or fiercer.
