Sway half your body, and leave the other half still.

Do not fear that your figure will snap.

For your figure needs only to be supported

by these hearts, though they complain of weakness.

I admired every limb of yours,

and singled out your long-lashed eyelids.

Twenty glances, were we to gather them,

would not be shared out as you share a glance.

You please those drawing near and those far away,

    and beguile row after row.

O Badi'a, indeed, as you come forward,

    you gather grace and charm.

And when you turn away, you reveal

to the eye the loveliest view from behind.

Shake your rump for them, if they wish,

and leave us what lies beside the rump.

Both fill the eyes, and the better of the two

is what fills both eyes and the palm.

And both are lovely; the better of the two

is what is light to carry and delicate.

This one flutters, yet we do not feel it,

and this one stirs us when it flutters.

And imagine that opportunities have arisen

calling for both to be snatched outright.

Then that one, with its two sides, would weigh us down,

while that one, so delicate, would go unseen.

And we would tire of this one and cast it aside,

and lodge this one in the breast-pocket and on the shelf.

And we would visit it in the morning, then kiss it,

and embrace it and smell it a thousand times.

And we would moisten it with the blood of hearts, even if

they are precious, and revive it when it dries.
