In Jaffa, the day the mounts were brought to rest,

A rain cloud poured, and the clouds grew dark.

And night enfolded the lovely maiden,

With furtive tread and no shooting star within it.

And the pouring drizzle lavished kisses on her,

So she trembled at its teasing advances.

And Jaffa, with clouds roaming through her,

Was like a dreaming woman shrouded in melancholy.

And, her alluring charms laid bare,

Garments were sewn for her by the cloud's hand.

As though the sky, between the sun in her splendor

And the sun concealed beneath a veil,

Were a heart full of faith; then there stirred

Its misgivings, and doubt stole into it.

I stood, my glances scattered over her,

My gaze flowing through her haunts.

And the sea's waves washed the hollows of her feet,

And the domes bathed in rainstorms.

And her orange groves formed a girdle,

Marking her in lines like those traced in a book.

So I said, captivated by Jaffa's magic

    And by Jaffa's delightful peers:

Palestine, what a splendid mother! These

Daughters of yours are all lovely, round-breasted maidens.

A wind bore me from al-Zawra

To Jaffa, and an eagle soared with me.

What a merry bird you were! At you

The birds of the sky were furious with rage.

As though longing drove it on, while fire was kindled

In its wings by nearness to the star.

    فجاوزَه ، لِيبلُغَنا السّحاب

    We rode it to be carried to the clouds;

It passed beyond them, leaving the clouds to reach us.

It showed us how the star flutters with love,

And how the mist flirts with the sun,

And how her radiance makes the air dance

When she glides by, and her saliva makes it drunk.

It was no more than one thought and another,

Or else a leap, then a downward plunge,

Or else a doze that brushed eyelids

Drawn to the sky's vast reaches,

Or else an awakening, until it stretched

Its flight feathers, like a crow shaking itself.

And when fragrance filled the winding paths,

And a gate of the gardens of eternity was opened,

And al-Ludd appeared, spread out and wearing

A dye of flowers in full bloom,

I gazed with an eye that was covered

By a veil of wayward tears.

And I spoke, with nothing to offer but reproach,

Not knowing whom that reproach was for:

Is it true that borders differ between us,

Though neither the road nor the soil differs,

Nor are faces set apart from faces,

Nor the eloquent tongue of ḍād, nor the Book?

So, O my home when homes grow narrow,

And O my companions when companions are few,

And O you who race to embrace me,

My advocate with them is the finest literature,

And O you of radiant character, who never flaunted

Your kindness to me, nor showed favoritism,

Be assured: we are united by concerns

We share, and a common affliction binds us.

    عراقيٍّ طيوفُكُم العِذاب

    Nobly shining in every eye

    Of Iraq are your sweet images;

    And bleeding in every heart

Of Iraq are your gaping wounds.

And in a joyous future we have a share.

My rhymes, which I melted down, have spoken

In my defense: they are a molten heart.

And where verse falls short, you will erase

Its stumbles with your spacious hearts.

Though farewell is decreed and I am sorely troubled

By it, and departure drains my lifeblood,

Yet my return is from my people to my people,

And my homecoming from my homeland to my homeland.
