I prized the attainable ease of life I glimpsed there,

since what I hoped for was beyond reach.

And I was content with a shelter in which to take refuge,

remote from the degraded world, deserted.

And, despite willful, insolent disbelief, I began

ascribing my lot to luck and the decrees of fate:

a consolation whose imagining I could not

avoid—and how many a soul has been deceived by a justification!

The hideous cities never ceased to estrange me,

until I stood accused for my feelings and my thinking.

I condemned in them a milieu that did not suit me,

harsh in its traditions, reprehensible in its myths,

until I settled in a lush, shady haven,

    spellbound by every trembling apparition.

The countryside bestowed on me, from the graces of its paradise,

bowers troubled by the loneliness of houses.

They circled around me, not rejecting my nighttime conversation,

nor did I frighten them with estrangement and repulsion.

It was as though I, while the green meadows breathed upon me

with inspirations, were Imran's son upon the Mount.

They cast noon's heat into my breath, softening it

gently, and blunt the violence of hurricanes.

And they captivate you with a throng of their marvels,

    surpassing all verse and prose.

A revelation too sublime for words is what is spread

there in glad tidings by the heralds of dawn.

How many a meaning in nature is squandered

on paper by shortcomings of expression!

Here nature whispered to me, expressing

her beauty through the songs of birds,

and through the rustle rising from the trees,

through the breeze, and in the fragrance of flowers.

And my dwelling is a songbird's nest, built upon

a green expanse immersed in shade and light.

Here imagination roams free like the clear air,

its mantle unstained, its features ever laughing.

And the fountain of beauty has burst forth there,

with every treasured meaning, exquisite in its intent,

until the finest poetry seems unequal

to describing the fine details of these scenes.

It touches upon them only by approximation,

and encompasses them only by estimation.

I found the loveliest mingling to be

the frogs' croaking within the blackbirds' melody.

And the field appeared in its most splendid aspect,

a carpet of light spread across the expanses.

And the full moon sent a phantom of its rays,

which guaranteed solace for the deep darkness.

And the river laughed at the gleam of its countenance,

as though it were pieces of glass.

And the moon set the garden dancing, whose smiling

mouths revealed daisies showered throughout it.
