And a woman asks: Are you openly reviled?

Are you not a place of pilgrimage for young men and the grey-haired?

Are you not the heir to refined literature,

Are you not the beacon of the plundered land?!

Do your revilers roam free, with none to call them to account,

And are you made to hear it from there, with no kinsman?!

I tell her: Shall I not spare you a burden?

Shall I not tell you of the wondrous marvel?!

You have indeed stirred the burning pangs that lay hidden,

And have prodded at the gaping wound.

I have disowned the marching throngs, even if they converge

To block the bend in the roads before me.

The throngs of the Two Rivers—for stirred into motion

By them were the marching crowds of the foreign land.

So nobler than farces crawling onward

Are the farces of a drunken, merry night.

I have disowned the marching throngs, powerless

Save for the beloved's kisses upon the beloved.

They hem him in on a day of ease,

    To hand him over to a day of hardship;

To hand him over to base rabble,

    And an offender, and a dubious suspect;

To newspapers that sink low, without a conscience

Save what of them is slipped into pockets.

    They hurl talents into calamities,

    And drive virtues into faults.

    تُخلَّف سكتة الموت الرهيبِ

    I have disowned the clamorous marching throngs;

In their wake remains the hush of dreadful death.

In their eyes, my blood is fair game for a wolf,

Yet no lion grants a wolf leave to shed blood.

If only a valiant man ready to die could be ransomed

By crowds that perfume themselves with sweet scents.

And still the question has none to answer it,

    And heads remain upon heels.

Does my coming rouse sixty thousand,

Among whom the far-off leap upon those nearby?!

Standing, they seize what I compose for them,

Shouting to the echo of the golden word.

And a child is put to use, so I may wipe him clean,

As Christ did upon the cross.

And I am cast into the open, without a defender,

Whether noble, a man of letters, or discerning.

Ah, what an unarmed man, though he has armies—

    Millions who fight with heartbeats!

Can it ward off carnage and harm from you

    By folding ribs over hearts?!

And oh, for one deified among them, yet a stranger!

And oh, the misery of this bewildering land!
