And unveiled my poetry as an exhibition of emotions.

And found myself, on one page and the next,
Contradictory in my indignation and contentment.

I made fast what I made fast, deeming it easy,
If its undoing came due, to let it be diminished.

And found it hard to praise someone
Whom I had praised yesterday, willingly and compliantly.

Because the heart had been given free rein.

I played the hypocrite when hypocrisy was a levy,
Burning at my handiwork, scorched with anguish.

And once in them I shattered, with frankness,
Groups skilled at speaking so as to obscure.

And indeed I urged my heart and tongue to dictate
And impose upon the reed pen whatever they demanded.

Joy prevailed, and the lustre of some shone forth;
And the beauty of the others dimmed and drained away.

Overflowing, though I had been its bitter enemy.

In diverting verses I spoke by hints.

And resented this nature, free as it was,
Yet hindered by dissimulation from giving birth.

And feared it, pent up and poised to spring,
Like a lion, most fearsome when it seems to crouch.

And marvelled at one whose reach I could not match
In plunging into ruinous sins and courting them.

In ribald jesting I gave voice to his lusts,
And he passed as chaste, condemning me for such ribaldry.

And lifted the robe from these natures,
And spread them out, though eager to be folded away.

And behold, they were insects dwelling in a carcass,
Concealed; disgrace lay in their shaking themselves free.

And when some of their traits stirred poetry,
Hideous as they were, eloquence hurt and stung them.

And here is the one in which I praised a rainless flash,
False—I was deceived by his smile when he flashed.

And bargained for me as a target for the rumor-mongers,
Leading a gloater or a schemer toward it.

The wounding years have passed, but it has not.

Followed my nature in much, as it demanded.

And made the last thing to cross my mind
The thought of whether it would be loathed or approved.

And perhaps the best of the good in it
Will compensate for the worst within it.

And there is a debt to the country whose repayment
Is binding on me; I may yet live to see it exacted.
