How sorely the lamenting poet needs a cause for anger!

And the sensitive poet's distinction lies in anger.

As for the rhymes, they are melodies played

By the hand of calamities when it stirs my nerves.

    فما يهزُّك لحنُ الروحِ إن تَطِب

    Listen intently to my soul's music while it is indignant;

For the soul's melody will not move you if it is at ease.

The anguish of verses saddened you; in them you found,

Despite their melancholy, relief from distress.

The people's culture—tell me, where do you seek it?

In the press, as meager fare, or in books?

    وتلك فيما حوت " حمالةُ الحطب "

    This one, as it rushes forward, is a blundering blind she-camel;

And the other, in what it contains, is 'the carrier of firewood.'

As for feeling, I have not found it

In a gathering of learning or an assembly of literature.

I sense no revolt of the soul in poems,

Save a little, nor any power to move in speeches.

They weep, though no emotion has been stirred in the soul,

And laugh, with not a trace of delight.

Controlled by what the prompters suggest to them,

Like wooden wheels set in motion.

Had the reformers tackled 'hunger,' ruin would not have overtaken

Our conditions; this chaos springs from starvation.

My people—and I do not shrink from speaking frankly—

Are a disgrace to Ya'rub, a burden on the Arabs.

Their past distracted them from building their present,

And the husk of lineage distracted them from the kernel of endeavor.

We lived on our ancestors' honor, attaching it

To ourselves, as bandits lived on plunder.

    ما أبعدَ الأدبَ العالي عن العُصب

    Factions arose to promote outworn literature;

How far lofty literature stands from factions!

Stir hearts with a feeling you overflow with,

Then call—even deaf rocks will answer.

A writer was disgraced, an insightful scholar brought low

By feuds over titles and ranks.

    لو في يدي قلتُ عدّ القولَ وانسحب

    They cried, 'Again!' to one feeble and discordant;

Were it up to me, I'd say, 'Leave off speaking and withdraw.'

Even a friend I hold above imitation

Joins the clamor when the mass of people is in uproar.

Endure, my rhymes, immortal through all time,

If it is true that you are pegs of gold.

Otherwise, depart—may God bring low any trace

That the hand of ages and epochs can wear away.
