Thirty black years, black as graves,
haunted by a terrifying specter;
Around which the terrifying specter roams.

ويُعْتَصَرُ الدَّمُ، والأدمُع
the spirit is scourged there before the skin,
In them the soul is flogged before the skin,
and blood and tears are wrung out.
And blood and tears are wrung out.

وعجلُهُمُ الأصْلَمُ الأجدع
Proud noses that defy “the Jews,”
Proud noses among them defy the Jews
and their deaf, mutilated calf;
And their ear-cropped, nose-cropped calf.

عظاماً تناثرُ، أو تضرع
lofty brows like the beating wings of falcons—
And lofty brows, like the wingbeats of falcons,
bones scattered, or brought low;
Scatter as bones, or bow in supplication.

And the stricken in tents like an orphan's garment,

amid “shreds,” after the white pavilions
Upon tatters, after white domes
and green fields that no longer put forth;
And green fields, and all their branching growth.

and “Jerusalem,” where the call to prayer has fallen silent,
And Jerusalem, where the call to prayer has fallen silent,
and prostrate worshipers are driven away.
And those prostrating and bowing are driven away.

Yet we, when those able to give aid are called,
While we, in coming to the aid of those who give,
content ourselves with the weakest of faith.
Are content with the weakest of our faith.

Chiefs of the homeland—the homeland is an ember,
O leaders of the homeland—the homeland is an ember,
wondrous: when smothered, it blazes;
Wondrous: when smothered, it blazes.

ورعدَ الأزيزِ .. ولا يُسْمَع
it promises hell but cannot be seen,
It is reckoned an inferno, yet remains unseen,
the thunder of its hissing cannot be heard.
And crackling thunder, yet remains unheard.

It slips beneath the blindness of ash
And hides beneath the blindness of ash
for a time, deceiving whoever would deceive;
For a time, deceiving those who deceive.

then surges, showing no mercy to the merciful,
Then it rages, sparing not even the merciful,
nor to nursing mothers and what they nurse.
Nor nursing mothers and those they nurse.

وتأكل خَلْقاً .. ولا تشبَع
It drinks blood yet does not slake its thirst,
It gulps blood, yet never slakes its thirst,
and devours creation yet is never filled;
And devours people, yet is never sated.

then, long after harvest, it turns cool,
And turns cool shortly after the harvest,
making a world fertile with what it sowed.
And makes a world fertile with what it sows.

Stand, then, where the conscious stand,
So stand where the discerning stand,
where more is sought and harm repelled.
Knowing what to seek more of, and what to repel.

Extend “the hand of God” in defense of your right;
And stretch forth God's hand; your right
you will ward them off—and it is the highest hand.
You defend, and it is the loftiest hand.

Toward glory—a future is made,
And for glory—a future is being forged,
in “Baghdad,” more wondrous than her beauty.
In Baghdad, more splendid than her own beauty.
