Keep your stirrup linked to mine.

The road's shortness prolongs my weariness.

I shall clasp within my grave, to soothe my loneliness,

the tremor of lips and the quivering of lashes.

I never thought that separation's sudden visitation

was the journey's farthest reach and the end of seeking,

until I was afflicted with its misery and its bliss,

and lo, it was one cause among others.

I swear by your two eyes, entrusted with

the secret of life and the bewilderment of minds.

We are four captives in exile:

I, love, my hand, and my drinking cup.

    فتصَوَّريني منك رهنَ غياب

    I was thunderstruck with wonder in your presence;

so picture me, held hostage to your absence.

I listen to your voice, hovering in my ear,

and breathe in your scent, clinging to my clothes.

And I bring your phantom to visit my waking eye,

merry of step, drunk upon the lashes.

And I revere it too much to let it visit in slumber,

and so lose its way in a forest because of sleep's darkness.
