I came slowly to you, my weariness betraying me,

And mocking my youth and my gray hair.

It drags the wick from my lamp

And chokes the flame you once knew.

And I turned to you as fruit and a spring,

Though I am no glutton and no heavy drinker.

Such is my excessive love for you that it torments me.

Damascus, embrace me and be gentle with me.

    And I—strangeness being my nature—

Am enamored of the strange and the wondrous.

I am given more sorrow when I rejoice in you,

And some sorrow belongs to the traits of the rapturous.

A true promise sets his tears dancing,

Then turns him toward a promise stripped bare.

And he keeps vigil through the night, awaiting its morning,

Yet has nothing but a deceitful dawn.

Nor among counterparts have I seen the like of one opposite

Beside its contrary opposite, as a peer.

I grieved over the swaying visions

That alighted on me in a barren waste,

And the returning echo of memories,

Like lightning's flicker in a misty gloom.

A person remains, however often he is missed by

The hand of days, at the mercy of the hand that strikes true.

As though life seeps from a vessel,

    Deep-bottomed, with translucent holes.

How sweet life would be, were

Its playgrounds spared the strange visitor—

    وهان الشرُّ في هُلك مُريب

    That doom of which there is no doubt;

And evil would weigh less were doom uncertain.

How welcome the sun's presence, when

The stars of night have taken its place in its absence.

And how wretched the gazelle, never ceasing

To fear, all her days, a wolf's pounces.

My beloved friends, through whom are eased

The soul's cares amid grievous torment:

God's peace, as long as branches flutter

    Swaying above the fertile meadow,

And as long as over the hillocks among them trail

The east wind's skirts, its bosom perfumed,

And as long as the doves stir among them and sing

On an evening of generous, pouring steady rain,

Upon the choicest drinking companions: those who call

With sweet memories, and those who answer,

And those who are gentle, as softly glides

The physician's hand upon the sick one's pulse.

You spread a spirit through me anew

And lifted sorrow from the mournful face.

And through you I returned, though my ardor had cooled,

To the glowing embers of my blazing heart.

And I staggered beneath my thanks to you, for advantage was gained

By the giver's hand through shackling the recipient's.

I forbade my soul to drown in its passion,

And so drown in lamentation and heart-throbbing,

And be lured by ardent love, though it is death,

As a moth is lured by flame.

And I told it: “Your warning is what remains

Of scars upon the peaks of your heart.

What I have suffered should suffice for you to desist

    From slow death, and repent.”

It said: “I shall not repent, while in Damascus

There is a love on which I burn, and which warms itself by me.

And suppose I repented of the infatuations of an age

    That flutters over the cherished fawn's playground;

How then can I repent of passion's embers

Beside you, as you go proudly clad in gray hair,

And of Ghassanid night companions, who dispel

Black calamities with their radiant foreheads?

Shall I repent, when you have paved my path,

So that the parting of paths was lost to me?

And I have, in what I bring, an intercessor

For the lapses and sins within me:

    Your sweet poetry erases offenses,

And poetry has ever been an eraser of sins.”

O breeze of Damascus's east wind, let fresh moisture flow

In sips into my goblet and my cup.

And blow gently upon me, lifting

    The soul's doom, heralding awakening.

    And let sweet whispers flow

Over my lips like a stealthy tread.

And release the fetter that ensnared my tongue,

For I am neither fettered nor timid.

And grant me from your scent a fragrant waft

    Befitting Andalusia's fresh, supple branch.

O my lady Najah, to you I offer

The greetings of one writer to another,

To the sweet basil of refined literature,

Fluttering in the oasis of a fertile mind.

O my lady Najah, you know better

    What hearts tell of hearts.

I knew your all-embracing generosity from afar,

And tested your gracious nobility at close hand.

I matched what I heard with what I saw,

And found the awe befitting the awe-inspiring.

So you stood where the virtues unite—

    Refined, with modest, awe-inspiring dignity.

O my lady, every possessor of a share

    Of this world will be content with his portion;

And every brother will be parted from his brother,

And every radiant thing moves toward sunset.

To you I fled from you, for I was cast

By your generosity onto the brink of a dreadful precipice.

And you have gone so far in your kindnesses that

It is as though you are intent on my flight.

And I hope to return, though I fear

That you may turn back from the ways you now follow.

May you be safe, and ever remain a beacon of glory,

A tower of guidance, and the pride of the ages.
