أقولُI say مَلِلْتهاI grew tired of her .. وأَعودُand I return شوقاًin longing

كأنيas though I ماnot عَشِقْتI loved .. ولاnor ملِلْتُI grew tired
I say, “I have tired of her”—yet return in longing,
I say I'm weary of it, yet I return, longing,
as though I had never loved, nor grown weary.
As if I've never loved, never grown weary.
بلىindeed وكأننيand as though I لمnot أَثنِI bent منهاfrom her
أَماليدَsupple shoots of الغُصونthe branches .. ولاnor أَمَلْتI made lean
Indeed—as though I had never bent
But no! As if I've never praised
her supple boughs, nor made them lean;
Its bending boughs, never wished.
ولاnor سالتshe flowed بأكؤسهاin her cups دِهاقاًbrimming
معطرةَperfumed الحِفافِthe rims .. ولاnor أَسَلْتI made flow
nor had she flowed in her brimming cups,
Never let its cups pour freely
their rims perfumed—nor had I made her flow;
Fragrant to the lips, never wished to drink.
ولمand not أَعكُفْI lingered علىover مَرْضَىlanguid جُفونٍeyelids
ولمand not أبرأI recovered بِهنّthrough them .. ولاnor اعتللتI fell ill
nor lingered over languid eyelids,
Never bent over sickly lids,
nor found healing through them, nor fallen ill.
Healed by them, never weakened myself.

وماand not استعفيتُهَنَّI asked them to release me .. ولاnor استقلتI resigned
Ten years passed, and two more went their way;
Ten years slipped by, and two, independently,
I never asked them to release me, nor resigned.
Without asking leave, gaining independence.

بَلوتُI tested طِباعَهُhis ways حتىuntil كَلَلْتI wearied
A vile-natured man has fabricated whatever he wishes—
Let evil temper fabricate what it will,
I tested his ways until I grew weary—
I've tested its moods until I grew weary.
بأَنيthat I am حُوَّلٌwily .. إنif أعوزَتْنيwere lacking for me

that I am wily: if I lack
If poverty befell me, I have excuses
excuses for my bouts of boredom, I contrive them;
To offer for not visiting it, excuses ready at hand.

and that I have never risen over companions
I never set out to visit dear friends
whose nearness delights me, without setting again.
Except I slipped away, disappointed.
معاذَrefuge in اللهِGod .. والخُلُقِand by character المصَفّىrefined

God forbid—and by my refined character,
God forbid! Of refined character I'm made,
and the noble clay from which I was formed!
Free clay of which I'm molded.
ولكنيbut I وجدتُI found الودَّaffection سوقاًa marketplace

But I found affection a marketplace
But I found affection has become a market
where traders were wanted, so I withdrew.
Where people traffic, so I've withdrawn.

Through deceit I was struck, though I never deceived;
In weakness I was accused, though I'm not weak,
through cowardice I was abandoned, though I never abandoned others.
Abandoned through cowardice, though I'm no coward.
خَبَرتُI tested الناسَpeople والأيامَand the days حتىuntil
يدايmy two hands كليلتانِboth weary بماfrom what نَخَلْتI sifted
I have tested people and days until
I've experienced people and days until
both my hands are weary from all I sifted.
My hands are crippled by all they've grasped.
تَسُرُّهُمُdelight them هِناتيmy failings لمnot أُسائِلْI probed

بهمin them " عُرَّthe sores of الهناتfailings " ولاnor حَفَلتI took heed
My failings delight them; I never probed
My derelictions give them joy, though I don't ask
the sores of their failings, nor paid them heed.
Their help. They're blind to such derelictions.
ولمand not أَخبِطI churned معاجِنَهمtheir kneading-troughs فحسبىso enough for me

Nor did I churn their kneading-troughs; enough for me
I never kneaded their dough, so it's enough
were the hairs I had already drawn from them.
Their hairs are caught in it, infiltrating it.
ولمand not أسألْI asked مغازِلَهمtheir spindles خيُوطاًfor threads

Nor did I ask their spindles for threads:
I never asked to borrow their threads
what I had drawn out myself sufficed without them.
When my own would suffice, unraveling freely.
كذاكthus خُلِقْتُI was made ماnot ساوَمْتُI bargained with خِدنيmy close friend

Thus was I made: I never bargained with my close friend
Just so I was created; I never sold my cheek
over his hidden flaws, nor exploited them.
For their kisses, never acted the wanton.
ولاnor خُودِعْتُI was deceived بالأمجادby glories يوماًever

Nor was I ever deceived by glories,
I was never seduced by glory,
nor hailed them, nor prayed fervently.
Shouting, entreating for more.
ولكنbut بالسَّجيةِthrough innate character وهيwhile it is صفوٌpurity

But through innate character, pure as it is,
But by nature, it stays pure,
and through the contented soul, unadorned,
By spirit pleased, untroubled.
وجدتُI found الحسنَbeauty يكمُلُbecomes complete بانتقاصthrough deficiency
فلوfor if قيضwere granted الكمالperfection لماwould not كَمَلْتُI became complete
I found that beauty reaches fullness through a lack;
I found that beauty increases by diminishing,
were perfection granted, I would not be complete.
For were perfection decreed, I'd not have perfected.
وتنعدمُand vanish الفُروقُdistinctions بلاwithout عُيوبٍflaws
فلوfor if قِيضwere granted الكمالperfection لماwould not كَمَلتْthey became complete
And distinctions vanish when there are no flaws;
Differences disappear without defects,
were perfection granted, they would not be complete.
So were perfection decreed, it too would not perfect.
أَبِيis there in me? مَلَلٌweariness، ولوeven if قُويْضتُI were offered in exchange كوناًa universe

بمنfor those whom أهوىI love .. وماand what أهوىI love .. I turned away
Is there weariness in me? Were I offered a universe
My father, I'm weary, and if I were created
for those I love and what I love, I would turn away.
A new being with whom I love – yet I love no one – I'd be equitable.

And their phantoms surprise me, as though
Their ghosts come suddenly, as if
I had been borne to them anew:
I'm carried to them again, newly borne.

to an abode where I lived with them, happy
The pleasures I lived with them, happily
in their company—and a little ruin where I lodged with them.
Encamping together or staying in their ruins.

No, by God, I never suffered in their company;
By God! They never wronged me
nor did they burden me, nor I them.
Nor burdened me, nor I them.

Were there boredom in me, I would have tired of a temperament
If I possessed any tendency it would be
that burdens me, and turned aside from my own traits;
To faultfinding, swerving from my nature.
ولاستنْهَزْتُand I would have seized منsome of فُرصٍopportunities وأخرىand others

and seized opportunities, one after another,
If given the chance, I'd have leapt
and moved like swift quicksilver.
Like mercury, quick to transform.

But I trail my hem in pride,
But I trail my robe confusedly
in a robe I wrapped around myself fifty years ago;
In a garment I wrapped myself fifty years ago.

and what makes me prouder than embroidered linen
What I lost and what I gained shame me
is the harvest of what I lost and what I gained.
When facing the reed flute's melody.

Had I been made to bear it, like its possessors, as a fetter,
Had they burdened me with sin or evil
I too would have sunk into obscurity, as they did.
I'd have borne it as they did, stumbling.

But I have been brave; I do not care
But I took heart – so what care I
whether the gaming arrow I cast won or faltered.
If my period's long or short life's cup?

I asked Patience, “How did you become lovely in my eyes?”
I asked endurance, "How can I stay beautiful?"
It said, “Through your making me patient, I became lovely.”
It said, "That which makes me beautiful makes you so."

ولمand not أَنسَI forgot اللِّداتِage-mates ولاnor غَفَلتI was heedless
The daughters of Time make me forget myself,
The days make me forget myself;
yet I have not forgotten my age-mates, nor been heedless.
I don't forget grievances or remain heedless.

And at my most unyielding, should there appear
However difficult I become, if the rights
before me a faithful brother’s claims, I grow yielding.
Of a true brother appear to me, I find the road easy.

And I, though humiliation is among my foes,
And I – though humiliation's my ally,
find it easy to humble myself for his honor.
All is lightened by his dignity if I'm disgraced.

And here I am: the nights have not released me
From intimacy with the two cheek dimples.
from my cherished, intimate companion, nor have I let him go.

I have a chosen few: were I asked to weigh
I'd not prefer paradise gardens to them.
them against Paradise’s chambers, I would not choose the latter.

And were I made to bear every harm and evil
As ransom from their pain, I'd bear it.
as the price of defending them, I would endure it.
My father, I'm weary, yet I don't cease being faithful

Is there weariness in me? I have never ceased to be faithful
To words I've said or deeds I've undertaken,
to a word I spoke, or a deed I did.

And a café I have favored for half a century—
Celebrating its memory and fellowship.
I have celebrated its memory and its company.
A lifetime of memories of sorrows and cares

And a world of memories of cares,
I've used to shorten this or that sadness.
through which I shortened a care—or prolonged it.

Throughout my life, faces greet me;
With which, like the dawn's first light, I've dressed my eyes.
with them I have lined my eyes, as with the rising dawn.

I heave one sigh after another
For those I've lost and those I've wept over.
for those I have lost, and those of whom I was bereft.
I say I'm weary of it, as if thereby

Laying earth down on a dear grave.
I had heaped upon a dear one’s grave.
Yet I return, longing, to breathe in from it

And in passionate love I return, inhaling from her
The scent of earth where I've rolled.
the fragrance of soil upon which I was pampered.

I wonder—how many smiles did I lavish there,
How many tears heated and debased?
and how many burning tears did I let flow?

And I said to my companion, while the cup bent
My hand, as if steeping it in my blood:

Inspired by her glances, allure overflowing

and a muse—with what she coquettishly pours
Into my cup, filling it with her lips' dew.
into my cup from her dregs, I grew drunk.
She's filled it – leaning over to spill

And she grew drunk and leaned, letting fall
Onto my shoulder her tresses – and I'm filled.
her tresses on my shoulder—so I leaned too.

Through which I emptied what I never emptied before,

As though, on the stairways of its echo,
To the sky and never came down.
I had ascended to heaven and never come down.

and many a saying has weighed heavily—so I said:
Then I said: I see my seventy years as lifetimes

I see seventy years as ages when I am in my right mind,
Of clarity, and seven, should I err or stray.
and seven, if I grow heedless and if I go astray.
