    My night fled from darkness's grasp,

    And passed me by, though I had not slept.

    Whenever I plunged deeper into my dream,

    I imagined myself falling upon an idol

    That draws revelation from my pain

    And breathes life into my pen.

    Ah, O snare of thoughts!

    How many a bird has fluttered, yet never flown!

    The lamps flickered all around me,

    Quivering on the hills and in the open squares.

    And dawn's light walked through the darkness,

    And a train began to seethe,

    فهو في القُضبانِ ينزلجُ

    Its constricted chest ablaze;

    So it slides along the rails.

    And, like melodies upon a string,

    Coughs melted away in the hour before dawn.

    فُرِشتْ أُنساً لكَ الحَدَقُ

    Welcome, O insomnia!

    The eyes were spread out to keep you company;

    My eyes are your point of departure,

    While people's eyes close.

    For you I have provisions: anxiety,

    And the worn-out reed pen and paper,

    And visions in fate's tavern,

    Aged as wine for a wine-presser.

    فحمةُ الديجورِ تحترقُ

    Welcome, O insomnia!

    The coal of pitch-black night burns;

    And the bright stars drift apart,

    So the drowning one drags down the swimmer.

    Night's tattered robe has grown sheer,

    And a platter stands empty of pearls.

    And dawn walked in a daze,

    Like a stranger returned from a journey.

    يتمشَّى معي وينتقلُ

    I have a mountain of sorrow;

    It walks with me and moves from place to place.

    I have, though hope has dimmed,

    An ember burning in my heart.

    أبد الآبدينَ يقتتلُ

    Thought in its fury is but a hero,

    Fighting for ever and ever;

    An inspired commander without men,

    From whom the banner of victory has been withdrawn.

    Welcome, O insomnia!

    How many a favor you have generously bestowed on me!

    أجتلبه بمَسْمعي نغَما

    You are a gleaming radiance in my eyes;

    I draw it in through my ear as melody.

    Welcome, O anxiety!

    It found the wayward one, and the two were in harmony.

    Welcome, O choicest of the throngs,

    O you who lengthen the span of life!

    Welcome, O insomnia!

    Pass me some of the wine of wakefulness.

    كاختراق الثوبِ بالإبرِ

    Indeed, this life is pierced,

    As cloth is pierced by needles;

    And it is stolen away by illusions,

    As clouds steal away the rain.

    كم غدٍ ألوى فلم يزُرِ

    So gird me with it, and do not hold back;

    How many a tomorrow turned away and never came to visit!

    Welcome, O sleeplessness!

    How often, how often, you have fulfilled what you promise!

    فلنفسي من نفسها رَصَدُ

    Leave guards for those who have fallen asleep;

    For my soul has a sentinel from within itself.

    Welcome, O ember that burns

    Among the dead, all of them inert!

    Welcome, O rescuer of thought

    From the fangs of lethargy and numbness!

    Welcome, O insomnia!

    I am revived by unexpected happenings.

    I have a heart that burns in safety,

    And eyelids that are scratched by sleep.

    I think the soul, once anxiety has shaken it,

    Is unearthed like the choicest of treasures.

    I hate the full moon, forever uniform,

    And I love the stars that tremble.
