تَنَوَّرَwas illumined بالأبلَجِby the radiant one الأروَعِthe awe-inspiring
Let me be a ransom for your resting place, that bed
As ransom for your resting place adorned with the finest pearls,
Illumined by the radiant, the awe-inspiring,
Exhaling the fragrances of heavens and emitting the best musk.
بأعبقَby one more fragrant منthan نَفحاتِthe wafts of الجِنانِParadise
رُوْحَاًin spirit ومنand than مِسْكِهاits musk أَضْوَعِmore redolent
By one more fragrant than the wafts of Paradise
To quench your land on the day of deprivation,
In spirit, and more redolent than its musk.
And to mourn you, with souls imprisoned by your chaste approach.
وَرَعْيَاًand care ليومِكَfor your day يومِthe day of "الطُّفوفal-Tufuf"
وسَقْيَاًand watering لأرضِكَfor your land مِنas a مَصْرَعِplace of death
And care for your day, the day of al-Tufuf,
To guard your glory from humiliation by what you abhor of novelty,
And rain for your land, that place of death;
O you who attained the highest rank unattainable by intercession.
وحُزْناًand mourning عليكَfor you بِحَبْسِby binding النفوسsouls
علىto نَهْجِكَyour path النَّيِّرِradiant المَهْيَعِwide and open
And mourning for you, by binding souls
O you, advice to the ambitious heedless of their tomorrow,
To your radiant, wide-open path;
You emerged from a refuge for the frightened, and your grave was blessed as a refuge.
وصَوْنَاًand protection لمجدِكَfor your glory مِنْfrom أَنْthat يُذَالbe debased

And safeguarding your glory from debasement
Eras kneel before it and prostrate, taking shelter at its sides.
By any invention you would reject.
I sensed your soil so the breeze of dignity blew from your hero's mound.
فياso, O أيُّهاyou الوِتْرُthe unpaired one فيamong الخالدِينَthe immortals
فَذَّاًunique ، إلىuntil الآنَnow لمnot يُشْفَعِbe paired
So, O unpaired one among the immortals,
I rubbed my cheek until a cheek attained delight and did not ache,
Unique, still unpaired to this day;
And where the steeds of tyrants roamed, they did not dare trespass.
وياand O عِظَةَa lesson الطامحينَthe aspirants العِظامِthe great
للاهينَfor the heedless عنof غَدِهِمْtheir tomorrow قُنَّعِthe complacent
And O lesson of the great in aspiration,
I was alone as memories soared with my soul to a loftier world.
For the complacent, heedless of their tomorrow.
I circumambulated your grave in the imagination of an inspired recluse.
تعاليتَexalted are you منas a مُفْزِعٍterror للحُتوفِto death
وبُورِكَand blessed be قبرُكَyour grave منas a مَفْزَعِrefuge
Exalted are you, a terror to death,
As if a severed red hand from beyond the tomb,
And blessed be your grave, that refuge.
Reached out to a world flooded with injustice and oppression,
تلوذُseek refuge الدُّهورُthe ages فَمِنْand some سُجَّدٍprostrate

The ages seek shelter: some prostrate
Flailing in a jungle that engulfed either a wolf or a predator,
On either side of it, and others bow.
To replace the conscience of the oppressed with another downtrodden one,
شَمَمْتُI smelled ثَرَاكَyour soil فَهَبَّthen arose النَّسِيمُthe breeze
نَسِيمُthe breeze of الكَرَامَةِdignity مِنْfrom بَلْقَعِa barren waste
I inhaled your soil, and the breeze arose—
And to push these fragile souls fearfully to a more impenetrable sanctuary.
The breeze of dignity from a barren waste.
You emerged from a lightning that flickers if an igniting spark kindles.
وعَفَّرْتُand I rubbed in dust خَدِّيmy cheek بحيثُwhere استراحَrested
خَدٌّa cheek تَفَرَّىwas torn apart ولمyet did not يَضْرَعِsubmit
And I rubbed my cheek in the dust where rested
It envies thunderbolts that neither alleviate harm nor benefit,
A cheek torn apart, yet never submissive;
And did not sow seeds in the aftermath, though it burned, and did not plant.
وحيثُand where سنابِكُthe hooves of خيلِthe horses of الطُّغَاةِthe tyrants
جالتْranged عليهِover it ولمyet did not يَخْشَعِbow humbly
And where the hooves of tyrants' horses
It did not vacate its celestial towers, nor come down to earth,
Ranged over it, yet it did not bow.
Nor sever evil from its root, or extract the rot from hearts.
وَخِلْتُand I imagined وقدwhile already طارتِflew الذكرياتُmemories
بِروحيwith my soul إلىto عَالَمٍa world أرْفَعِloftier
And I imagined, as memories flew
Nor did it shock people from their abject morals.
With my soul to a loftier world,
You emerged from an orbit vaster than the widest circumference,
وطُفْتُand I circled بقبرِكَaround your grave طَوْفَthe circling of الخَيَالِimagination
بصومعةِaround the hermitage of المُلْهَمِthe inspired one المُبْدِعِthe creator
And I circled your grave as imagination circles
O son of the immaculate, I suffice with her as surety for all I claim,
The hermitage of an inspired creator,
And O son of one peerless in conception and birth,
كأنَّas though يَدَاًa hand مِنْfrom وَرَاءِbehind الضَّرِيحِthe tomb

As though a hand from behind the tomb,
O son of the incorrupt womb and the resolute hero,
Red, its finger severed,
O branch of Hashim none flowered or branched better,
تَمُدُّreaches إلىtoward عَالَمٍa world بالخُنُوعِwith submission
وَالضَّيْمِand oppression ذيpossessing شَرَقٍchoking مُتْرَعِbrimful
Reaches toward a world that, with submission
O you who completed the eternal anthem beginning and end alike,
And oppression, is brimful and choking,
People pace to the footsteps of time, zigzagging and swerving,
تَخَبَّطَfloundered فيin غابةٍa forest أطْبَقَتْclosed in

Floundering in a forest that has closed
While you steer the course of eternity unfailingly straight.
Around its wolfish or predatory inhabitants;
I imagined your day in my thoughts and echoed your voice in my hearing,
لِتُبْدِلَto replace منهُin it جَدِيبَbarren الضَّمِيرِconscience
بآخَرَwith another مُعْشَوْشِبٍlush with grass مُمْرِعِfertile
To replace its barren conscience
Scrutinizing your matter, neither reacting to narrators, nor being deceived.
With another, lush with grass and fertile,
Perhaps the echo of your momentous event across ages,
وتدفعَand drive هذيthese النفوسَsouls الصغارَsmall
خوفاًthrough fear إلىtoward حَرَمٍa sanctuary أَمْنَعِmore impregnable
And drive these souls, made small
And the chants of devoted preachers in prose and verse,
By fear, into a more impregnable sanctuary.
And the elegy pouring upon you evening and dawn in poetry and tears,
تعاليتَexalted are you منas a صاعِقٍthunderbolt يلتظيblazes
فَإنْand if تَدْجُgrows dark داجِيَةٌa dark night يَلْمَعِit flashes
Exalted are you, a thunderbolt ablaze;
Were due to politics and its machinations against someone close or claiming nearness,
And if a dark night deepens, it flashes.
And its banishment of all guided by your rope or adhering to your creed.
تأرّمُyou gnash your teeth حِقداًin hatred علىagainst الصاعقاتِthe thunderbolts
لمdid not تُنْءِavert ضَيْراًharm ولمand did not تَنْفَعِbenefit
You gnash your teeth in hatred at the thunderbolts
Perhaps this stems from the innate painful grief over the calamitous,
That neither averted harm nor brought benefit,
And its hand in distorting the tale of Hussein with a desired colorful twist,
ولمand did not تَبْذُرِsow الحَبَّthe grain إثرَafter الهشيمِthe dry stubble

وقدthough already حَرَّقَتْهُthey burned it ولمand did not تَزْرَعِplant
Nor sowed grain after the dry stubble,
Yet it remains erect if resolutions are sought, whatever it wants it devises.
Though they had burned it, and planted nothing;
When I unveiled the overlay of centuries, and the guise of the deceiver,
ولمand did not تُخْلِvacate أبراجَهاtheir towers فيin السماءthe sky

ولمand did not تأتِcome to أرضاًearth ولمand did not تُدْقِعِbecome destitute
Nor abandoned their towers in the sky,
I desired the “truth” in its essence, unadulterated and untouched.
Nor came to earth, nor knew destitution;
I found you in an image unparalleled in greatness or brilliance.
ولمand did not تَقْطَعِcut off الشَّرَّevil منfrom جِذْمِهِits root
وغِلَّand the rancor of الضمائرِconsciences لمdid not تَنْزعِremove
Nor cut off evil at its root,
What could be more brilliant than your flesh sacrificed over slaughter,
Nor removed the rancor of consciences;
That you fear not for your conscience bound by the permitted,
ولمand did not تَصْدِمِconfront الناسَpeople فيماin what هُمُthey

Nor confronted people over what
And you feed death the best of sons from infants to the grown,
They followed of the basest conduct.
The best of the Prophet’s kin, and his daughter’s best,
تعاليتَexalted are you منas a "فَلَكٍcelestial sphere" قُطْرُهُits diameter

Exalted are you, a sphere whose diameter
The best souls protected you with their chests and arms.
Revolves about the broadest axis.
I sanctified your commemoration, neither feigning piety nor pretending.
فيابنَso, O son of البتولِal-Batul, the Chaste One وحَسْبِيand enough for me بِهَاwith her

So, O son of al-Batul—and she suffices me
You delved into my heart though doubts clamored within its walls,
As a guarantee for everything I claim;
And clouds of disturbing worries poured over me,

And O son of her whose like never bore
Until winds blew from sweet basil and the righteous, steady and unshifting.
A child like you, nor ever nursed one;
You overcame the darkness in my mind and straightened my contorted ribs,
ويابنَand O son of البَطِينِthe ample-bellied one بلاwithout بِطْنَةٍgluttony

And O son of the ample-bellied one, without gluttony,
And I had faith like one whose only proof against doubt is reason.
And O son of the bareheaded youth, bald at the temples;
So the evidence led the helm willingly to you in submission.
وياand O غُصْنَbranch of "هاشِمَHashim" لمdid not يَنْفَتِحْblossom

And O branch of Hashim, that never flowered
You enlightened what darkened of my ideas and rectified my crooked sides,
Or branched with anyone more radiant than you;
And I became certain like one who sees none but reason to resort to against suspicion,

And O you who join, in the anthem of eternity,
That stubbornness, revelation, and prophetic bounty derive from a pure essence transcending worldly temptation.
The poem's ending to its opening.

Then it willingly surrendered you the reins,
And gave you the submission of one hastening to obey.

So you illumined what had darkened in my thought,
And straightened what was crooked in my ribs.
