Do you know, or do you not know

That the victims' wounds are a mouth?

A mouth unlike one making a mere claim,

And unlike another begging for mercy.

It cries out to the destitute and hungry:

Shed your blood, and you shall be fed!

And calls to the submissively hastening throng:

Humiliate your base men, and you shall be honored!

Do you know that the tyrants' necks

Are weighed down by spoils and sin,

And that the bellies of the ruthless, which

Digest whatever they digest of ill-gotten gain,

And that the harlot who claims

A glory that Mary never attained,

Will collapse if this blood boils over

And this mute mouth speaks out?

Oh, what an ointment, never discovered

By physicians, nor ever applied by them!

And what a balm, bringing healing

When no balm can be hoped for!

    And what a scowling mouth,

Through which the lips of hopes smile!

Do you know that a martyr's wounds

    Keep asking about vengeance?

Do you know that a martyr's wounds

In their hunger digest whatever they swallow?

They suck blood, then crave blood,

And keep insisting, asking to be fed.

So say to one who remains in his humiliation,

A mongrel, pressed into service or bridled:

    Plunge—curse you!—into the bullets' whine,

And try whatever fortune is allotted.

And brave it as the forerunners braved it,

And follow up what the earliest began.

So either toward where life appears

To your eyes as an honor to be won,

    Or toward a grave that

Your dark house could never surpass.

Plunge—curse you! What do you hope for

From life, whose waters you are denied?

Is it more painful than being despised,

    Or deadlier than being destitute?

Plunge! Who, then, will brave death

If the most wretched and ill-fated shuns it?

Plunge! Who, then, can blame the potbellied man

If someone like you will not plunge?

They say: Who are these rabble?

So show them, through blood, who they are.

And show them, through blood, that they

    Are your slaves: if you summon them, they will serve;

And that you are nobler than their best,

And your heel more honorable than his cheek.

My brother Ja'far, O freshness of spring,

    Handed over to cold decay!

And O flower from the gardens of eternity,

    Devoured by a thunderous gale!

And O spark from the blaze of life,

Extinguished when a fire flared for it!

And O countenance of gladness as it shines forth,

And O laughter of dawn as it smiles!

I kissed your wounds at an opening

That is the pure Qur'an when kissed.

And kissed your chest, where the innermost core

    Of the heart, torn open, is pierced;

And where the birds of hope seek refuge

    Within it, circling in terror;

And where the qualities of men had settled,

And a mine had gathered their ores.

And patted a cheek moist with youth,

    Quivering as a bud blossoms;

And stroked some locks that hung

    Over it, as a lover does;

And consoled myself with liquefied pus,

    As Zamzam consoles one who comes to drink;

And gathered from the overflowing froth

At your lips a honey that was bitter colocynth.

And you repaid my kiss with a kiss

Into which you squeezed all that hurts.

Into it you squeezed the memories that

Had passed like the dreams of sleepers.

My brother Ja'far, the echo of the years

After you is, to me, an indistinct reverberation.

Thirty years we passed through together,

    Tormented at times, and enjoying ease;

We fight time, and it surrenders,

And at times we are defeated and surrender.

    وذو الثأرِ يَقْظانُ لا يَحلُم

    My brother Ja'far, I do not speak of fantasy;

One bent on vengeance is wakeful, not dreaming.

But of what the patient have been inspired to see—

An inspired soul may read the unseen.

I see a horizon that, with dark-red blood,

    Has lit up, while the stars have vanished;

And a rope from the earth, by which one ascends,

As a ladder propels the climber upward.

If an oath-breaker stretches a hand toward it,

An oath-keeper steps forward to cut it off,

Formed into a mound from corpses around it,

    Huge corpses, whose glories are greater still;

And a hand extended from behind the veil,

    Drawing upon the horizon what it draws;

And one generation going, another coming,

And a fire kindled before them both.

I tell you that the homeland is aflame,

    Its valley filled with pain.

And woe to a strangling power on the morrow,

If tomorrow breathes out what it represses!

And that the blood shed with impunity

By a violent man flaunting his police,

    Oozing from your cherished chest,

In a hemorrhage appealing to God against injustice,

Will long continue to draw more blood,

And nothing will cool blood but blood.

    And that the breasts shattered

By a criminal, so masterful at shattering them,

    Who scattered their ribs abroad,

In fragments, as a dirham is changed into smaller coins,

Will be embraced by the breasts of young men,

Stern for justice, showing no mercy.

My brother Ja'far, it is certain knowledge

I tell you, if you wish to know:

You were struck down, and hearts circled over you,

And the greatest assembly hastened to you.

    وضاقَ الطريقُ ، فلا مَخرم

    The arcade was blocked: no exit;

    The road narrowed: no passage.

The south conveyed your news to the north,

    And one in al-Sham consoled one in Iraq over you;

    Callers overwhelmed the telephone,

And the pen clamored through the written lines.

    You learned how men die,

And how mourning is held for them,

And how crowds are drawn to you,

As a pilgrim in ihram was drawn to the Sanctuary.

I laughed as the questioners murmured,

And their murmuring weighed upon the ear.

They say you died, while the physicians

Hold an opinion other than what they claimed.

And you are healed, as we hope,

And you are cherished, as you know.

I laughed and said: Good for them,

And for all they concocted or conjectured about you!

For they seek a blood that heals

    The sore-eyed and the leprous;

A blood with which the sincere and unbowed refute

The renegades and what they have divided.

And they seek a blood upon which

    Hearts meet and join together;

    Until you fulfilled their expectation—

Oh, what a debtor who gains!

For they have the greater claim to you; what befell is lessened,

Like a root divided by a number.

And they have the greater claim to you, though terrified

Is an old woman, slapping herself over a piece of her flesh,

And losing faith, since heaven no longer

    Rescues the bereft or shows mercy;

And a sister tears her dress at the breast for you,

    And a wrist digs into her breast;

She implores the stars' glitter for news of you,

Hoping you might emerge from among them.

And claims you will come in the morning,

Though the grave has belied her claim.

Let the nation's nose rise proudly at your loss,

While my nose and theirs are pressed into dust.

My brother Ja'far, by the bonds of brotherhood,

    Pure between us, I swear;

And by tears that, after you, do not relent,

    And by grief that, after you, is not defeated;

And by the house engulfed in loneliness,

Like your grave, asking: Will you come?

And by friends and family, who find it strange

That you have turned away from them:

I swear, memories of you will bite into me,

    As the speckled serpent bites.

If a joyful apparition visits me,

A painful apparition rises to confront it.

And I am a stick in the hand of the winds,

Asking them when it will be snapped.

My brother Ja'far, the sorrows of grief

Will sever my cord, yet will not be severed.

Clear from your heart the flotsam of conscience,

And hide nothing from me, for I hide nothing.

If you have any cause for reproach,

I have many times as much remorse.

And if, in what we were tried by,

And what befell us—an irrevocable decree—

You devise an excuse to console a brother,

Then you are the one who may boast of it, the benefactor.

The distillation of a lifetime of varied experiences,

Full as a dictionary is packed,

Holds what I can use in my defense,

And what leaves me speechless and bridled.

The tears of the young made your grave-soil flow,

And blood from you lit up the tomb.
