The fragrance of youth and its poured-out wine

Surely waft from your sleeves and grow sweet.

And from spring, a freshness on your faces

Glistens with dew, and a blend of life's honey.

    مما يفيضُ يكادُ يُترَعُ كوب

    And from youthful vigor, a limpid stream flows down;

From its overflow, a cup is almost filled to the brim.

And you indeed—if a guiding star disappears,

Or a dark, pitch-black calamity is decreed,

And anguish intensifies, and a way forward narrows,

And paths and roads grow forbidding for us—

Are lamps that light those stumbling blindly, and stars

By whose light we set out and return.

The world scowls, and whatever smiles turns grim

Within it, and gloom assails life,

Until, when youth smiles, it melts away

As clouds dissolve in fair, clear weather.

O you devoted to lessons, as though you were

    Mighty falcons circling in thirst,

And you who shun pleasures, whose concern is

A bell being rung, a rostrum, and a speaker.

They have forsaken trysts with beauties, while they have

Among the benches an appointed meeting.

More alluring to them than a beautiful face

Are the book's face and the affection they court.

Indeed, Iraq, without a champion from among you

And without a protector, is desolate and barren.

Long live your arms, for they are guarantors

That whatever rights were stolen will be restored.

And may your feelings flourish—what a wealth

They offer us to reward and recompense the sincere!

And you—yes, you, and none but you—

Are the country's hope and its sought-for treasure.

And you, when no consciences can be hoped for,

Are consciences and hearts for the Two Rivers.

And you, if our pages are marred

By newly wrought failings and sins,

    لم يَلْتَصِقْ دَرَنٌّ بِهِمْ وعيوب

    Are the pure, like water from the sky;

No grime or flaws have clung to you.

    We—having gone the distance, with

Our ends drawing near and experience tormenting us,

Our stages of life having joined forces and mingled,

And reproach and rebuke having jolted us,

And our steps faltering from so much

Urgent night travel, hard running, and cantering—

Surely see in you the lofty ideal for a nation

That aims at its goals and hits the mark.

    وغداً إلى أحضانِكُمْ ستؤوب

    It is a nation that has not embraced its hopes;

Tomorrow it will return to your embrace.

And tomorrow a father will be absolved of what he did

    Unjustly—by his son's hand—and will repent.

So stand together: tomorrow's dawn is near

To you, and everything hoped for is surely near.

And look ahead: the road before you will be lit

By a blazing flame whose beacon shines.

And pledge that you shall not be divided

By a wayward man, nor shall a wolf slip among you.

And remember the colonizers, for they are

A scourge upon this land, and a sin.

So understand: Iraq, with all its bounty

And wealth, is plundered for their rabble.

And discern: there is an unveiled face

Among them, and another veiled in foulness.

And equally disgraced is a colonizer

Or whoever takes his place and acts as deputy.

Beware of being deceived by your success

In what is read and written,

Or thinking that the road, as you knew it

Among the classes, is paved and wide.

Indeed, in life your striving will surely be tested

By its grueling success and failure.

And the sleepless—may they be rewarded for their nights

By God, by teaching, and by training.

Toil has worn them out, and the best fighter

Is an exhausted, weary man who rallies a nation.

O my dear brother Abboud, you have no need

Of praise, but ingratitude is shameful.

If weariness has touched you and al-Hussein,

Or hardship and fatigue have befallen you both,

Then surely you two and the poets are alike:

Like candles that guide others and melt away.

These are what you both have planted; is there any planter

Whose planting flourishes and grows fair like this?

And is immortality sweeter than the state you two

Are in? The lot of the immortals is wondrous:

They do not reckon their existence; yet their existence

Is reckoned before existence itself, and above it.
