Was it the glow of the domes, or wearying fate,

that drew me to you, O Yathrib?

So I came, robed in misery, escorted

by a procession amid the labyrinth's phantoms.

    Sighs loiter among my ribs,

and the alphabet sobs in my blood.

And the embryos of dreams, when stirred

by your whisper, their electrified spirit quivers.

Do Yathrib's palms, I wonder, still remain

those that give birth to lofty pride and bring it forth?

Or did time's arrow pierce them, so they ripened

into a wound with which the downtrodden stained themselves?

And they came to you from where manhood's

history still gushes with the blood of dignity,

groping for the dregs of that hope

at whose hand the wound once grew fertile.

O Taybah of radiant victory! No darkness turned

its heroes aside through the trackless wastes.

And behold, heaven pours into their hearts' stirrings

the dream of prophethood, unbridled and aflame.

Until, when they burnished your soil, and there blossomed

from its scattered radiance the ages,

they stood on the spearpoints as minarets,

stretching into life's horizon, till it grew green with grass.

O Taybah of the victory in whose race

    gray-haired struggle spent its youth.

And a message breathed the fragrance of conquests,

where heaven and Ya'rub were joined in marriage.

It came to you: its forearm improvising strength,

    and its shoulder inventing resolve.

And since you stormed into life with it, in the footsteps

of Taha, who draws and pulls you toward success,

self-sacrifice sharpened its reed pen on you and set to work,

watering it with immortality's ink and writing.

Until, when the day of brotherhood's

links broke and the scorpion assailed it,

your noble, untamed steeds forgot their rallying cry,

and the ash-gray neighing collapsed within your blood.

And you remained for generations a spring of ardent longing

whose Kawthar no longer seethes and rages.

And the ages gazed, beholding you; what startled them

was a conquest canned in your glorious past.

You smuggled it as a phantom in the memory of wishes,

exulting—but never can conquests be smuggled!

Dust bred a thousand tribes upon it,

that set about vying with it for brilliance and plundering.

And your two hands hold no sun to battle

the tempest of the winter of ignorance, and prevail.

Stretch them backward, and let flow

the day of brotherhood, and gather what it pours forth.

    يهتزّ نبض حياتنا المُتَخَشِّب

    And cradle our souls in its purity;

the wooden pulse of our life will quiver.

So we shall smelt the distant horizon over the blaze

of our resolves, until the planet melts.

And we shall sweep history clean of what was transmitted

within it by the wolves, and what the fox narrated.

And we shall peel truth, wrapped in darkness,

until its blazing core shines forth.

And we shall again deflower the stars; it is enough for us,

in what we hope for, that your back is a vessel.
