The clay of this world would not have been kneaded
the clay of this world would never have been kneaded.

With what settled of its tragedies, and what ripened

two rivers embracing the beginning and time.

by the Euphrates' water upon the palms' breast, as ripe fruit.

O ancient one who appeared while the expanse was nothingness,
And you summoned revelation from anxious horizons
and prepared the earth until it became a dwelling.

From the realm of the heart his prophethood came to him,
And you inclined toward meanings silently
hastening, and he became a trustee of inspiration.
In their utterance, so you endowed them with eloquent tongues

in the mind of the unseen, to make the ways sprout.

You called on the divine will to flow with what it carried
in their wording, and bestowed eloquent speech upon them.

The mills of time blew against him, grinding him
of destinies, whether good fortune or sorrow.

And since the unseen confided its ordeal to him,
By God, o father of the two rivers! If a mountain
he has remained tested by the secret of the unseen.
Faced what you faced, it would have crumbled

without tightening a halter upon its shoulders.

You still stand upright in the Flood's grip,
And you are a head the prophets stand by
and the waves around you are a ghoul swallowing ships.
And carry upon their shoulders tribulations

Enough are the messages in the night of struggle if

You awake while the cowards sleep

and carry trials upon its shoulders.

You remain the ransom lamb of earth, slaughtered by

none but Husayn, and went seeking Hasan.
And made no concessions for those in whom we dwelled

You have never ceased to be earth's sacrificial ram, slaughtered by
Loyalty refuses until the last breath except
the flock's lord to appease an idol with it.
To be entrusted to al-Abbas

Loyalty, down to the last forearm within it, refuses
I thirst for your water, o father of the two rivers! In me is a thirst
to let you be anything but a trustee of Abbas.
For revelation that did not cease flowing in your two rivers

For I have found you a thread in the horizon of death
to Karbala, and offer radiance to al-Ghari.

My words have stood in a line in their expression
so I may gather you within it as anguish and wasting illness.

and in the eyes of death as swords and spears.

a rank that donned rhythm and found its balance.
You are to me a palm tree's heart fused

A greeting, O imam of water, in an age
And if I split from my being a scent
whose clouds rain down hatreds and grudges.
Toward your barn, I have from your self my self

upon your hills, I have an 'I' drawn from your 'I.'
That plays killing ever so gently

I love you, O killer whose knife is a string,
I stood at the brink of your tremor, confused
that plays killing only softly and pliantly.
With yearning, a star dangling in my blood and approaching
إنيindeed I أتيتُI came برَفٍّwith a flock منof ملائكةٍangels

I have come with a flock of angels
I extend my arm like the oud's neck embracing
entrusted with the sorrow I was made to bear.
The chest of wounds that found no embrace

I stood a tremor's breadth from you, entwined
So race with your wound toward resplendent melodies
with longing—a star that hung down in my blood and drew near.
Pure white, and dress it with gauze and cotton

I extend my forearm like the oud's neck, embracing
I declared you love, a love we do not deserve
the breast of wounds that found no one to embrace them.

Today a human is born upon my lips
white, and bind gauze and cotton over it.
From the anthem composed in Babylon

I proclaimed you Love—a love we do not deserve
I have come to shake off the Suspended Poem
as two lovers if we do not recount it openly.

Today a human being is born upon my lip
Let me blame the camel driver in my tongue:
from the song given meter in Babylon.
How much did he waste in the desert a river of wealth!

I came to shake from myself a Mu‘allaqa ode
And do not ask a poet about his tribe
of injunctions—no campsite, no ruined traces.
That lives on its inheritance of misery and distress:

Let me reproach the pale-camel chanter in my language:
My grandfather Farazdaq did not stop

I saw it in the mirrors of yesterday, imprisoned!

I did not find your face in the mirror of its moment;
I took refuge in you from what the torrent
I saw it imprisoned in the mirrors of its yesterday.
Of the tribe might bring in its tumultuous seditions

it is all the same whether the past grew lean or fat.

سيلُthe torrent of القبيلةِthe tribe فيin أمواجِهِits waves فِتَنَاstrife
I sought refuge in you from what may be brought
O noble family of loftiness, we have a womb
by the tribe's torrent as strife within its waves.
From music, we have family, we have.. and we have
عنديI have شكوكُthe doubts of (سليمانٍSolomon)، فمعذرةًso apologies
إذاif ذبحتُI slaughtered برأسيwith my head (الهدهدَthe hoopoe) الفَطِنَاdiscerning
I harbor Solomon's doubts, so pardon me
A will we split from its breasts
if I slaughter the discerning hoopoe with my head.
Of old, and when we descended we breathed its milk
ياO أُسْرَةَfamily of الشَّجَنِsorrow العاليlofty، لناwe have رَحِمٌa womb
منof (الموسيقاmusic)، لناwe have أَهْلٌkin، لنَاwe have.. ولنَاand we have
O family of lofty sorrow, we share a womb
And the soul's shadows remain one
of music; we have kin, we have... and we have
Due to how much we bury one another in each other
مشيئةٌa will قدalready تَشَطَّرْنَاwe shared مراضعَهاits nursing breasts
قِدْماًlong ago، ولَمَّاand not yet نَزَلْwe have ceased نستنشقُwe inhale اللَّبَنَاthe milk
a will whose nursing breasts we divided among us
We came to life and engineered the void with it
long ago, and we still inhale the milk.
A dream net sprinkling creatures with purpose
وماand not تزالُcease ظلالُthe shadows of الروحِthe soul واحدةًone
منfrom فرطthe abundance of ماwhat بعضناsome of us فيwithin بعضناsome of us دُفِنَاwere buried
And the soul's shadows remain one
Since the first letter our fingers did not doze
because so much of us lies buried in one another.
Upon it, and did not covet nap
جئناwe came to الحياةَlife وهَنْدَسْنَاand engineered الفراغَthe emptiness بهاin it
شُبَّاكَa window of حُلْمٍa dream يرشُّsprinkles الكائناتِbeings مُنَىwishes
We came into life and engineered its emptiness
We slapped the sky's face with a laugh
into a dream-window spraying beings with wishes.
Mocking those who held God in pawn
منsince أوَّلthe beginning of الحرفِthe letter لمnot تنعسْgrew drowsy أصابعُناour fingers
علىupon يَدَيْهِits two hands، ولمand not تستطعمِtasted الوَسَنَاslumber
Since the first letter, our fingers have never dozed
And whenever the pulse of the universe faltered confused
upon its hands, nor tasted slumber.
We went balancing it with poetry and it steadied
وجهُthe face of السماءِheaven صَفَعْنَاهُwe slapped it بقهقهةٍwith a guffaw
هُزْءاًin mockery بمَنْof those who أَمْسَكُواtook hold باللهِof God مُرْتَهَنَاas a hostage
The face of heaven—we slapped it with a guffaw,
We reproduce this creation, make it
mocking those who held God hostage.
Sweeter, and endow it colors and allure
وكلَّماand whenever اختلَّfaltered نبضُthe pulse of الكونِthe universe مضطرباًagitated
رُحْنَاwe set out نُوَازِنُهُwe balance it بالشِّعْرِwith poetry فاتَّزَنَاso it regained balance
And whenever the universe's pulse faltered in turmoil,
Except jinn made it their dwelling
we set out to balance it with poetry, and it regained its balance.
So my regrets in obsessive worry
نعيدُwe repeat إنتاجَthe production of هذاthis الخلقِcreation، نصنعُهُwe make it
أحلَىlovelier، ونمنحُهُand we give it الألوانَcolors والسِّحَنَاand countenances
We reproduce this creation, making it
Whether worry in the world is blessed or cursed
lovelier, and giving it colors and countenances.
Despite the processions, graves overflowed
هناhere (العراقُIraq) الذيwhich ماnot ثَمَّthere قافيةٌa rhyme
لمnot تَتَّخِذْهُhas taken it لجِنِيَّاتِهاfor its female jinn سَكَناa dwelling
Here is Iraq: there is no rhyme
Due to how much the earth’s interior congested and clotted
that has not made it a home for its female jinn.
Do not read the Abundance surah in a homeland
فياso O ندامايَmy boon companions فيin هَمٍّsorrow سواسيةٍequal
إنْwhether بوركَwas blessed الهمُّsorrow فيin الدنياthis world، وإنْor whether لُعِنَاwas cursed
So, O my boon companions, equal in sorrow,
That built metaphor.. built meaning.. built.. and built
whether sorrow is blessed in this world or cursed,
Nothing enticed the flesh but its killer’s sword
رغمَdespite الجنائزِthe funerals فاضَتْoverflowed عنbeyond مقابرِهاtheir graveyards
منfrom فرطthe excess of ماhow غصَّchoked جوفُthe depths of الأرضِthe earth واحتقنَاand grew congested
despite funerals overflowing their graveyards
Until the sword bent back disgraced and subjugated
from how choked and congested the earth's depths have grown,
So here death is loftier than its tragedy
لاdo not تقرأواrecite سورةَthe surah of (الأجداثِgraves) فيin وطنٍa homeland
وبَنَىand built
do not recite the 'Surah of Graves' in a homeland
A meaning, and more radiant than life's countenance
that built metaphor, built meaning, built and built.
O you for whom we raised hymns of glory
ماnot سَوَّسَmade worm-eaten اللحمُthe flesh إلاexcept سيفَthe sword of قاتلِهِits killer
حتَّىuntil انثنَىturned back السيفُthe sword مخزيًّاdisgraced ومُمْتَهَنَاand debased
The flesh riddled only its killer's sword with worms,
So you leaned toward us in kindness and bent
until the sword turned back, disgraced and debased.
You still delight in the earthly world
فهاso behold هُناhere الموتُdeath أسمَىloftier منthan فجيعتِهِits tragedy
معنًىin meaning، وأنصعُand brighter منthan وجهthe face of الحياةِlife سَنَىin radiance
For here death is loftier than its tragedy
As much as this world delights in you
in meaning, and brighter than the face of life in radiance.
You marry one land to another, and how many a land
ياO مَنْone who رَفَعْنَاwe raised أناشيدَhymns of الجلالِmajesty لهُto him
فمالَand leaned عطفاًin tenderness عليناtoward us، وانحنَىand bent down، وحَنَىand showed compassion
O you to whom we raised hymns of majesty,
In it places fornicate with places!
who leaned toward us in tenderness, bent down, and showed compassion,
How much sacred spirit in your soil
ماnot زلتَyou have ceased بالعالمِby the world الأرضيِّearthly مفتتناًenchanted
مقدارَthe measure of ماhow بِكَby you هذاthis العالمُworld افْتُتِنَاwas enchanted
you remain enchanted by the earthly world
That embodied it and became body for the heavens
as much as this world is enchanted by you.
No rosary was blessed in the hand of faith
تُزَوِّجُyou wed الأرضَthe earth بالأخرىto the other world، وكمand how many بلدٍa land
فيهِin it البقاعُthe regions يضاجعنَlie with البقاعَthe regions زِنَاin adultery!
You wed the earth to the other world; and how many a land
Until it sang to you praise and grace
has regions sleeping with regions in adultery!
We sought your approval and settled in its field..
كَمْhow many فيin ترابِكَyour soil منof روحٍa spirit مُقَدَّسَةٍholy
تَجَسَّدَتْهُtook it as flesh فأضحىso it became للسَّماfor heaven بَدَنَاa body
How many a holy spirit in your soil
What would approval be if not homeland?!
has taken it as flesh, so it became a body for heaven.
Upon you we leaned on the shoulders of a memory
لاnot بُورِكَتْwas blessed فيin يدthe hand of الإيمانِfaith مسبحةٌa rosary
حتَّىuntil تزفَّit brings joyfully إليكَto you الحمدَpraise والمِنَنَاand favors
May no rosary in faith's hand be blessed
That affirms time so it does not fail us
until it brings you praise and favors.
Who came before nights, it is not said to him:
هَبْنَاgrant us رضاكَyour favor ووَطِّنَّاand settle us بساحتِهِin its courtyard..
ماذاwhat يكونis الرضاfavor إنْif لمnot يكنْis وطناَa homeland؟!
Grant us your favor, and settle us in its courtyard;
You were late for those who raced time!
what is favor if it is not a homeland?
They said: You have evaporated! They said it, not glancing
بِكَthrough you اتَّكَأْنَاwe leaned علىupon أكتافِthe shoulders of ذاكرةٍa memory
تُثَبِّتُsteadies الوقتَtime حتَّىso that لاnot يميدَit sways بِنَاwith us
Through you we leaned upon the shoulders of a memory
Until you condensed in their horizons, weighted
that steadies time so it does not sway beneath us.
The earth must live on hope
مَنْone who جاءَcame قبلَbefore اللياليthe nights، لاnot يُقالُis said لهُto him:
مَنْ جاءَ قبلَ الليالي، لا يُقالُ لهُ:
لقدindeed تَأَخَّرْتَyou have fallen behind عَمَّنْbehind those who سابقَraced الزَّمَنَاtime!
One who came before the nights cannot be told:
In which no green growth wears finery
'You have fallen behind those who raced time!'
قالواthey said: تَبَخَّرتَyou evaporated! قالوهاthey said it، وماand not التفتواlooked back
حتَّىuntil تَكَثَّفْتَyou condensed فيon آفاقِهِمْtheir horizons مُزُناrain clouds
They said, 'You evaporated!' They said it, and did not look back
until you condensed into rain clouds on their horizons.
لاno بُدَّescape للأرضِfor the earth أنْto تحياlive علىon أملٍhope
ماas long as لاحَappears فيهاin it اخضرارٌgreenery يرتديwearing فَنَنَاa bough
The earth must live on hope
as long as greenery appears in it, clad in a bough.
