Lull your blaze—how long must this seething last?

The ages were fever-stricken by your wounds' heat.

And history erupted in your name—a revolution

with fires racing behind its cavalcade.

Wrathful, you storm the ages, as though

a volcano were hurling you from its bowels.

And I, behind you, am an eternal flame,

    in whose breast faith shines.

I stride proudly through the fire that inscribed upon

my eyes that you are gardens for hearts.

And I melt in the flame whose embers are embroidered

with love for you, where melting is sanctified.

O breaker of idols, their shattered remains

have joined forces, and the idols have returned.

They have returned—alas, what a return!

In its stride, hatreds dress in finery.

And the message of light that set forth upon

your palms—its address was lost amid its tide.

    And you remained sacred stirrings,

yearning for safety to flood life.

    Shrouds leap within you, though

those shrouds were woven for others, not your majesty.

And the earth shakes you, the earth that is driven

by injustice, yet its turning does not rebel.

Ah, prince of the weary—how long

will you remain, with humankind your conscience's burden?

Misery still binds you to its sufferers

through love, and deprivation tugs at you.

In loving heaven, you grew addicted to dignity

for the earth—blessed be that addiction.

And you opened your breast to sorrows; enough for them

is what sorrow has embraced within your breast.

It is the cry of light, whose blaze awoke

within your ribs, and the melodies rose in revolt.

And they leapt forth; behold, life was illumined

by a pulse within your soul, creative and artful.

It cast its shadows upon me, and there echoed

through my lines the paintbrush and the colors.

And to the uprisings of liberation in my blood

the homelands devoted themselves, performing its rites.

And the downtrodden drew breath; I was hurled

amid the veins of flame by a flood.

And in the letters' nest upon my mouth there stirred

an eagle, and a horse trotted through my blood.

My lord, does a singer stir your hearing

with poetry, claiming to be a curlew?

Does your soul delight when a brazier puts forth leaves

with praise of you, and a cup grows drunk?

Far be it from you! You did not soar as pinions,

radiant, so that flight might glory in you,

but to pour into the suns your purity,

    eternal, when they lack radiance.

of the spirit, so that gratitude might surround you,

but so that souls might drink you in, quenching

the thirst of the doves within them, while the serpent thirsts.

of what you planted, and feeling had miscarried.

    This truth—its veins remain

thirsty; its heartbeat all but disowns it.

And roses are almost accused because of their beauty,

and palms condemned for their proud generosity.

My lord, lull your blaze, for never could

seething melt away any of our pain,

so long as Adam's son grieves you whenever he complains of

pain, and tenderness is wrested from his hands.

My lord, poetry's arm is too strong

for prices to shackle its resolve.

    Poetry's spirit soars too far

for bars to hem in its horizon.

    Poetry—you are its father in the law of love;

and when have children ever relished betraying you?

Poetry's veins have never ceased blazing

with your blood, where the Qur'an flourished.

in its conscience; the betrayer will retreat in disgrace.

Every poem will die at birth

in whose depths no hungry man has trembled.
