Dusky ones move slowly upon the rippling waters,

like slender maidens, drawing coolness from a lip of the river.

    في قلبهن أُوارُ الشمسِ يتقِدُ

    The poems come in flocks, carrying thirst;

in their hearts, the sun's fierce heat blazes.

They draw near to the bank, seeking water at its drinking places,

radiant rhymes, though scorching heat has laid them low.

Indeed, the Euphrates is translucent in its lush freshness,

and, quick to anger, it darkens whenever it is wronged.

Is that roar water in its channels,

or tears gathering across the span of history?

Or did a jinn plunge into its depths, so down fell

the blossoms of the stars, trembling on the waves?

This is Iraq; grievous are its agonies.

In each of its homes, a liver has already been torn apart.

And its patience is Job's patience; it is beset

by worms that roam upon its blood and gulp it down.

    قطراً فقطراً على المحراب تُفْتَصَدُ

    The purity of blood—slanders have ravaged it;

drop after drop, it is bled out upon the prayer niche.

What is creation's purpose? Does it lay its passions

upon pillows, or does anguish cast it down?

And Iraq has a yearning for us that we shall carry

as embers; neither palm nor upper arm shall complain.

And it is hope and death, should death try

proud souls, patient as they have always been known.

The heart does not grow weary, even of its hardships,

nor of choking griefs, for it is fire and hail.

    وهو اللصيقُ بنا هيهاتَ يبتعدُ

    And it is the beloved, even if its playgrounds lie far away;

and it is bound to us—never will it draw away.

By God, how beautiful the world is on the lips

of a child this beating, singing heart has longed for.

It is Iraq; its hardships bring comfort.

And it is wise in our ways, the close friend and the child.

Indeed, we are like birds: their resident ones never forget

this Iraq, nor does dispersal unsettle them.

    نحن الأخايا لها، والسقف والوتدُ

    From our ribs we raise the house, towering;

we are its anchoring tethers, its roof and its stake.

We will not accept its humiliation or be there for it

like scattered remnants; rather, it shall soar, and we shall join forces.

We are its full moons in the night of its darkness.

A conviction binds us with the firm bond of passionate love.

If the thunders were roused from their lairs,

and foamed with a thunderous crash, the fetter would be shattered.
