مَنَّتكَhas beguiled you نَفسُكَyour soul مِنout of غَيٍّfolly أَمانيهاits hopes
Convey to Muhalhil, from Bakr, a far-carried message:
Your soul, in its folly, has beguiled you with its hopes.
تَبكيyou weep for كُلَيباًKulayb وَقَدthough already شالَتhas risen نَعامَتُهُhis footsole (in an idiom for death)
حَقّاًtruly وَتُضمِرُand you conceal أَشياءَthings تُرَجّيهاyou hope for
You weep for Kulayb, whose soles have already turned upward in death,
Truly, while concealing things you hope for.
فَاِصبِرso stand firm لِبَكرٍagainst Bakr فَإِنَّfor indeed الحَربَwar قَدalready لَقِحَتhas conceived
وَعَزِّand console نَفسَكَyour soul عَمَّنover those who لاdo not يُواليهاbefriend it
So stand firm against Bakr, for war has already conceived,
And console yourself over those who will not stand by you.
فَقَدfor indeed قَتَلناwe killed كُلَيباًKulayb لَمdid not نُبالِwe care بِهِabout him
بِنابِfor an aged she-camel جارٍof a neighbor وَدونَand less than القَتلِkilling يَكفيهاsuffices her
For we killed Kulayb, caring nothing for him,
For a neighbor’s aged she-camel—though less than killing would have sufficed her.
نَحميwe defend الذِمارَhonor and dependents وَنَحميand we protect كُلَّevery أَرمَلَةٍwidow
حَقّاًtruly وَنَدفَعُand we repel عَنهاfrom her مَنwhoever يُعاديهاis hostile to her
We defend our honor and protect every widow,
Truly, and drive away from her whoever is her enemy.
