وَإِذاand when تَكونُarises كَريهَةٌa battle أُدعىI am summoned لَهاto it
وَإِذا تَكونُ كَريهَةٌ أُدعى لَها
وَإِذاand when يُحاسُis mixed الحَيسُthe dish of dates, butter, and curds يُدعىis summoned جُندَبُJundab
وَإِذا يُحاسُ الحَيسُ يُدعى جُندَبُ
And when grim battle comes, I am summoned to it;
And when a battle arises, I am summoned to it.
And when the ḥays is mixed, Jundab is summoned.
And when hays—the date-and-butter dish—is mixed, Jundab is summoned.
هَذاthis لَعَمرِكُمُby your lives الصَغارُhumiliation بِعَينِهِitself
هَذا لَعَمرِكُمُ الصَغارُ بِعَينِهِ
لاno أُمَّmother ليfor me إِنif كانَis ذاكَthat وَلاand no أَبُfather
لا أُمَّ لي إِن كانَ ذاكَ وَلا أَبُ
This, by your lives, is humiliation itself—
This, by your lives, is humiliation itself.
May I be motherless and fatherless if that is so!
May I have neither mother nor father if that is so.
