Shunning is your ailment, and courting is mine.

Your cure is estrangement, and proud refusal is mine.

Is my punishment, now that I am drunk with love,

to be that of the wretch who partakes of tawny wine?

If your law in love is rejection,

then my law is my fidelity to the lover.

Alas for a lovesick lover, reckoned neither dead,

so that he might rest, nor among the living!

To God belongs the affair of love! How often people have slept,

while the eye will not cease weeping without sleep.

Nothing remains for me in the cup but a sip,

in the drinking companion's hand, and a tear for my solace.

O my Lord, there is no reversing Your command and decree,

but these are stirrings born of a deep sigh!

For union is the utmost I seek; will tomorrow

come echoing the sound of my call?
