In the darkness of the universe, no light coursed through it,

nor did the echo of a passing human flow.

For the horizon was despondent, and the star was veiled,

and the clouds rained, pouring in torrents.

On a night among the nights of time, bearing

the earth’s robe of sorrow and woes,

I came into life, its darkness in my eyes.

I came into life, and behind me was the specter of my fates.

And silence settled over the house, gathering thickly,

and along its sides, like veils.

As though the house, ashamed of what had befallen it,

wished it could hide from every gaze.

Likewise, the women slumped into their seats,

and began whispering in doubt and denial.

What was the secret? What was the matter with her? Were you dead?

No, I was nothing but a “girl”—those were my secrets.

And my father’s specter appeared in the house, agitated,

and in his breast were embers upon fire.

Until, when he bent over me to caress me,

he saw the truth in terror and denial.

So he began raving to the One who kindled ashes into flame,

and awakened the dead through wonders of resurrection:

“A girl? My God—and I hope for nothing but a son!

O stain in my blood, O humiliation of disgrace!”

And in the wake of that night there rose, spreading freely,

a new dawn that shone without warning.

And I went on, roaming through the desert of life,

which bends tenderly over me with a raging, fiery breast.

On my wrists, the shackles of misery are everlasting,

and with the collar around my neck, I sing my poems.
