هَلdo? تُؤنِسانِyou both discern بِصَحراءَin the desert of اللِوىal-Liwa ناراa fire
O my two companions, with the prison gate between you and me,
My friend, the prison door separates us
Do you two discern a fire in the desert of al-Liwa?
Do you find solace in the burning sands?
لَوىLiwa, the sand-bend of الدَخولِal-Dakhul إِلىtoward الجَرعاءِal-Jar'a موقِدُهاits hearth
وَالنارُand the fire تَبديreveals لِذيto one with الحاجاتِlongings أَذكاراmemories
Its hearth is at Liwa al-Dakhul, toward al-Jar'a.
The flames of yearning burn within my soul
And the fire awakens memories in one with longings.
And fire reveals itself to one in need of prayer
لَوif يُتبَعُwere followed الحَقُّthe truth فيهاin it قَدalready مَنَيتُI was afflicted (likely مُنِيتُ) بِهِwith it
أَوor يُتبَعُwere followed العَدلُjustice ماnot عَمَّرتُI inhabited دَوّاراDawwar
If truth were upheld there, in the ordeal that has befallen me,
If truth could be pursued here, I would have found it
or justice followed, I would not have dwelt in Dawwar.
If justice ruled, life would not be this abyss
إِذاwhen تَحَرَّكَmoves بابُthe gate السِجنِthe prison قامَrise لَهُin response to it
قَومٌpeople يَمُدّونَstretch out أَعناقاًnecks وَأَبصاراand gazes
When the prison gate moves, there rise in response to it
When the prison door creaks open, people crane
people craning their necks and straining their eyes.
Their necks and strain their eyes in hope
