وَالقَومُ قَد جاوَزوا ثَهلانَ وَالنيرا
I remembered Hind—yet what good is remembering her?
I remembered Hind, though remembering her is fruitless,
While the company had already passed Thahlan and al-Nir,
For the people had crossed Thahlān and Nīrā,
عَلىon قَلائِصَyoung she-camels قَدhad أَفنىworn away عَرائِكَهاtheir humps

تَكليفُناها عَريضاتِ الفَلا زورا
On young she-camels whose humps had been worn away
On litters that had worn out her camel-litters,
By our forcing them across the broad-breasted desert wastes.
Our asking her for more was but false pretense.
